there is already power in/near the rear hatch, so you'd think there would be some radio wave control kit made for them...

Anyone added power door locks to their van lately?

I would really like to add the whole system to my Joker. Guess I've gotten so used to having power locks on my Westy. Wink

I see that VC has all the switches for the slider and all the factory actuators for the doors, slider, and rear hatch. It's kinda spendy but would be stock.

Thoughts?

I found it a LOT easier to junk the stock stuff and have a stereo shop add a modern system.

These SPAL switches look much better than stock (and come with LED backlighting)

And here they are installed in my ride

The SPAL kit is complete and installs easily. Windows are quiet and fast. Feels like a quality system. I can't comment on their longevity as I only installed mine last June.

Go with this aftermarket power window and locks. $150 for power lock alarm system, $175 for the power window system. If your handy you could install it yourself or go to a stereo installer. I did most of it myself. Not that hard.

Go with the Spal power windows and switch
Go with A-1 Mes power lock alarm

spal power window

Thanks guys. But, I'm only interested in power locks. I actually like manual windows Smile

Do these after market door locks work with the slider and rear latch?

The after market power locks come with four actuators. Which means you can make the doors, slider, and the hatch.

I did the doors and the slider. I didn't do the hatch because the wiring to the back was enormous amount of work for my weekender. I did a write up do some search. The slider is definitely a challenge. But once finished all worth the trouble.

ShadeTreeTim,

Do you have a single or double identical switch(es) on the passenger side door?

Edit - looked at the good kit, looks like double on drivers side and single on passenger. Nice!

The kit comes with a single on the passenger side. Wiring harness included. Whynotvw's picture is exactly how I installed my motor's. An afternoon's work.

Excellent, thanks guys.
On further reflection I think I'll do without the rear hatch also.

Yes.
I just removed all of the parts and every wire without cutting anything to swap them into a Syncro van that didn't have them from the factory.
Not a job for anyone in a rush or lacking patience.
The Syncro has been bare metalled for paint and the interior gutted so running the factory wires was easy...just as VW did when the vans were being built.

I used the above thread to install power locks in our 83 1/2 Westy. For the slider you need to get a used contact set up to get the power over to the lock actuator or buy the contacts and make a housing to mount it to the slider door like this.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I wired my PL to only go up and down by the door switches or the remote, so you only need two wires. If you want all actuators to move when you pull up or push down the door lock button, then you need three wires.

I used this set up http://www.a1electric.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?S...=W02F-712T
http://www.a1electric.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?S...gory_Code=

I haven't done the hatch yet.

JPrato,
What did you use to back the A1 contact plate? How's it holding up? Your install looks good.

As mentioned in the other thread, I ended up sourcing a set of stock contact plates at added expense. Future installers would benefit from your experience with the A1 plates.

I would use the factory used contacts for the slider. I bought the A-1 contact for the slider and noticed those will not work as well as the factory ones.

Here are couple of the pictures to mount the actuators for the doors and for the slider.

You must drill this hole for the linkage and use the rivets like the factory to mount the actuator.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

For the slider, best to weld a little piece and drill a hole for the linkage.

picture of the slider, make the linkage paralllel as possible so you dont have problems down the line. I used two bars $5 and riveted them in and used it for acutator.

My factory central locking is missing a lot of parts. I plan on getting the A-1 kit w/remote.

Bump.

Has anyone installed the A1 MES power lock to the rear hatch in a van that did not come with it? What additional parts were needed? Pics?

Thanks.

They work OK but you need to make a mount to allow it to stick out halfway on the door edge. Factory is the way to go, but you might not be able to find one when you need one. In your case you had one handy.

Yup, I finally did mine a few weeks ago - for me it was more like a weekend's work, but that's par for the course as a mechanically declined individual Wink
