Since we have a plethora of new late bay VW owners suddenly making posts - it is time to warn y'all that you never tighten the oil strainer nut more than 9ft lbs if you take it off or a real expensive disaster will occur involving a complete teardown of your motor. DRILL that into your memory now.

Always use oil drain plug to change oil, never remove strainer is the rule I would use. _________________ 73 Type 181

I believe in cleaning the strainer every 100-150K miles when I reseal the engine. |

maybe if someone could mfg a nut that didn't have such a big hex portion.
even if it's round you can get 9ft lbs on it with a pair of water pump pliers. _________________

As a reminder to you and others, maybe impact stamp a big "9" or "9 lb.ft." on the head? Paint it bright red maybe?

Was it Ray G that came up with the mod to help avoid this issue? I was thinking of doing the same when I rebuild... but then again I know better than to use 200 ft lbs on the damn thing so |

isn't that damn close to never?
and, what's "reseal the engine?"
i've never done that, and can't wait to try. _________________ 1978 Champaign Edition 2 Westfalia

I don't think I've ever come across anyone in the last 40 years who has actually overtightened their strainer nut and had a problem.
This is a similar to the warning not to start your engine without oil in it.
I think that these are old wives tales but I'm sure we will now hear the stories of my brother's sister's friend's brother who did one or the other. _________________ *******************************

I cleaned the strainer every 3k on my first bus.
Then this one time I found -0- stuff in there & noticed the spin-on oil filter & asked myself wTf I was doing & gave that bad habit up.
Unless it's a New-To-You bus just clean it once & leave it alone.
......Like that Seinfeld episode where Costanza double-dips a chip....bad form.

The error and damage is so common that there is a name for it - Type IV syndrome. The issue is that anyone who owned a type 1 engine VW got in the habit of changing the oil thru the strainer. Along comes a TIV engine and they do the same and hand tighten it. That is enough to break it. Very common problem - and expensive mistake. That is why we remind people about it. _________________

I do in fact know a fella who broke his case, as he came to me for a replacement to rebuild
it not only can, but does happen.
