|
|
So I'm changing my leaking push rod tube seals for the first time. I've read all the manuals, Samba forum topics, Ratwell's site, watched the Type IV rebuild video, took digital pics before, etc. It all comes apart fairly easily (too easily?) and a few twists and tugs and one by one they come out. Hey, this isn't too bad at all!!
I even intend on doing only one side at a time - so if I have trouble re-assembling, I can refer to the one I haven't touched. That is, until I discover the front tube on the drivers side has a little rusty dent in it, which I push on with a dental pick to scrape off, and it goes through!!! Well, I enlarge it to the size you see here. Believe it or not, the tube wasn't leaking from this spot (well, not much as it was more on top, not bottom), but it was leaking from the lifter side seal a lot. So then, I decide I might as well tear into the other side too, to see if any other tubes are in a similar state, because I have to get a used replacement tommorow from a local mechanic. Fortunately, they were in better shape. I have new Viton seals ready to go in, and will seal them with Loctite 565.
All in all, quite a beneficial learning experience, although the job isn't finished yet!!

Use nothing but the seals and oil. This is the result of using things like Loc-Tite (or in my case Permatex). Not pretty when you need to remove them again.

Where exactly are the push rod tubes located? Do I need to look for them in the engine compartment or underneath? Like most buses, I have a nice oil leak and would like to fix it. Thanks for your help! _________________ 1971 Deluxe Transporter "Winston"

PR tubes are underneath. They run between the cylinder heads and the block. There are 4 on each side. _________________ 72 Super Beetle

underneath some bottom tins if the tins are still in place. unfortunately, changing push rod tubes on the 1600 also requires removing the heads.

So... I should possibly replace the push rod SEALS, right? to reduce oil leaks? _________________ 1971 Deluxe Transporter "Winston"

Depends. Your leak could be from a number of sources. The seals would be a good candidate though. _________________ 72 Super Beetle

I was originally going to use just oil, but on an earlier push rod tube thread, both Scott of German Supply and Jake Raby highly recommended Loctite 565 - its non-hardening and remains flexible to provide a good seal, so I think I'll go with that. Besides, I already have a tube of it!
My first thought on seeing the hole in the tube was to JB Weld it, but I quickly discarded that idea. _________________ Darryl

For all intents and purposes, as long as its clean clean clean the JB weld will work for the time being. Id also make sure that when installed the portion with the hole is on top. After the JB Weld dries of course. _________________ 72 Super Beetle
