I am trying to get as much info as I can on type 4's. I have seen this: Volkswagen Official Factory Microfiche Repair Information Archived on CD-ROM, Types 1,2,3,4 1969-1979 including Type 181, Bentley, 2002 , and I'd like to know exactly what they contain on type 4's. Are they pdf versions of "lettered" factory manuals issued for vw shops? Is this cd rom worth buying? I am hesitant to shell out 100 bucks for that. Would like to hear the opinions and reviews of type 4 owners who have this cd rom. _________________ Notchback 1965

I wish I knew the answer to that. I have never gotten anyone who owns a type 4 to answer that. You might also ask on the STF. I may have missed someone who has looked at this collection who might know. Ray |

I have that Bentley manual on CD and the quality is what you would expect from a typical Bentley reproduction of a VW factory repair manual. The big problem with this CD is that it will only run on Bentley's proprietary eBahn software which only operates with Windows 2000 or XP.
Many years ago I called Bentley customer service to ask if eBahn would be upgraded to work with Windows 7 as it would not run on my (then) new laptop. The response was no! I see that Bentley is still offering this product new, on their website, with the same system requirement. If your computer still has Windows 2000 or XP, I highly recommend it! _________________ Chris Hobbs

Thank you Chris!
I guess my only question is....is the section on the type 4 vehicles as complete as it is for other vehicles....or is it just limited to what information they had?
I still have a functional notebook with XP this would run great on. Ray |

Hi Chris, I also found your 2004 post at Shoptalkforums, you wrote "I just got my copy of the Types 1-4 Bentley CD set in the mail today. It is the real deal, an Adobe Acrobat-style reproduction of the factory repair manual microfiche set as it was distributed by VWoA circa 1981-82. Right now I'm checking out instructions on how to replace various 412 front seat adjustment cables--something you won't find in Haynes or Clymer."
Question will that manual help to resolve seat back repair? I have the driver's seat locking when placing the seat back to its up position, see photo , taken before repair, we got that area to lock, but then the seat back doesn't hold and still flop backs. So we are thinking there is something inside the seat back, a locking mechanism, that needs repair. There must be something in addition, a locking bar?, to hold seat up. Thanks in advance

In answer to the folks searching for reviews about the Bently Type 1-4 manual. I saw that the VW classic parts website had posted a few pages of a workshop manual for types 1 and 2. I asked for more and received a very nice e-mail from a very nice fellow directing me to this:
http://www.michaelknappmann.de/bulli/michaelk/vw_bus_d/reparat0.htm
My eyes popped when I started reading. This webpage is a scan of the original german version of the VWOA service manual I have seen referred to in here several times. This manual has absolutely everything, and I mean everything. I just looke at most of the automatic transmission teardown procedure.
I took a reading course in German for grad school, so now I am dusting off my knowledge and dragging out my books! |

The magazine is from 1968, but definitely show prototypes, because the gas door has a finger grove. This detail came not with the serial production.
The big Headlights have been avaible only in MY 69 ( 7.68-7.69). Only Southafrica had them later in the standard version.
Scandinavia was an interesting market for Volkswagen, because the Eberspächer was a nice serial option for North Europe.
Here some various literature from Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark.
