Thank you, I sold my last 61 double cab last year for my 56 23 window euro and last week a friend told me about this one. It will be a fun build. Here is a picture of the 23 window I need to start on as well.

That is a rare plate frame. Very, very tough to find.
I just saw pics of this from Jason G. last Thursday. He was almost as excited as I imagine you are! Is that from Los Osos? I been bugging Clark for 25 years and the answer was always a resounding"NO!". How did you get past the Missus? She was like a mother bear. Wouldn't even let me talk to him the last few years.
I think you'll find one of my business cards somewhere in there. I threw it in there so Randy would know I was poaching on him. That ranch is where the "Goat'el" and it's parts bus came from. I have some pics of it out in the open I will scan.

Yes, this is Clark's bus from Los Osos. It came up for sale two weeks ago and the word was getting out quick. Yes original to the area and the dealership. Chris, I will give you a call tomorrow. Yes please scan and share the photos.

Obligatory “they’re still out there”.
Now that that’s been said, here’s a bus that came out into the daylight after a very long slumber. Ran and drove and came home yesterday.
January of 1964 21 window Turkis deluxe. Every single interior panel is there, including the side panel for the middle seat, which is also there and in incredible shape.
Absolutely unreal the condition this thing is in. Single owner bus that lived in New Jersey it’s entire life.

In short, the bus was owned by a fella who passed away, and sat in his widows garage for many years. Mutual friend said his coworker (widows son) had told him his mother had a 21 window bus sitting in her garage.
Now, the bus itself and the family history is great. The bus was bought brand new by the ladies husband. They had 10 kids and drove this thing up and down the east coast. That alone is insane to believe considering all of the interior panels are still there and not wrecked. The middle seat does not have a single rip, and the only reason the rear seat is ripped is because they put an engine on it at some point.
They had 2 spare bumpers (front and rear), and the rear spare had a trailer hitch mount, which they used to tow a small boat with. 10 Kids, 2 parents, in one bus, towing a boat
Anyways, the family had heard that "these things were worth a lot of money", but the lady didn't necessarily care for the money, nor did she need it. The deal itself worked out only because she realized the bus will remain in the neighborhood, it'll be brought back to its glory, and she will one day see it driving around town again. She was not keen on the bus being sold to some random person who would ship it somewhere to never be seen again, and she especially didn't want to sell it to someone who had plans to fix it up and flip it for an absurd amount of money.
The widows son would occasionally start the bus up, put stabilizer in the tank, and clean it down. On Friday when we were there to pick it up, it was mentioned that it would be towed the 10 minutes to its new home, and the family without hesitation said "It still runs and drives, why not drive it?" which is exactly what was done. My friend, the new owner, drove it home under its own power.
Bus itself has some small rust issues throughout that will be addressed. It'll be gone through completely in order to make sure that any issue is corrected, as this will be a driver. Expect to see this 21 being driven A LOT.
I'll post up some other pictures of how it looked in the garage as found, and some other shots we took the night it went to its new home. |

That was my first internal question. 9 kids remain, with a healthy amount of grandkids. One of the grandkids is actually one of those "Van Life" kids who travels the country in some sort of newer van. Surely you would think he would want to keep it.
I genuinely think the Grandmother/Widow simply figured that her kids and grandkids had plenty of time to lay claim to it and bring it back to life. Nobody did.
By no means was this one of those deals where the lady sold it for peanuts, she received a VERY generous offer which she accepted only after talking to the rest of her family. So her kids (who are all grown adults) and her grandkids (young adults) all had the opportunity to change her mind or step up to taking responsibility for it. She's very happy that someone local who is into old VW's will fix it and continue to take it on adventures and most importantly drive it. |

That does not surprise me, I have run into this situation before, good to hear none of the extended family were standing there saying," your getting ripped off Grandma" . The last car I looked at was a rough parts Truck, I asked the elderly lady- " what about your Kid's, wouldn't they want it " ? To which she replied that She would take care of them...

Nope! The late-owners wife is in her 70's, but her adult son would occasionally wipe the bus down, start it up, or put stabilizer in the gas tank when he would come down to visit.
It certainly has its issues and imperfections, but they'll be addressed as needed. Should be comfortably driving this summer, and it will log miles and be driven daily, weather permitting. This bus won't be a garage queen.
Buddy's goal is to clean it up, get all of the interior pieces and trim back where they belong, go through the entire bus mechanically, and then drive back to the widows home and take her for a ride, along with whoever else in the family wants to join. |

My screen name is irrelevant, I'm not the one who ended up with it. A good friend of mine is, but he's not active on the Samba.
As for your question, weeks. The son of the owner mentioned to his coworker that his mother had a 21 window bus that she would be interested in selling. That coworker mentioned it to my friend as he knows my friend is into splits.
Friend went over to look at the bus a week later, and to talk to the family. The family who was there liked what my friend offered in terms of his character and how respectful he was regarding the late-fathers bus. The family simply wanted the bus to go to a good local home which would bring the bus back to its glory and drive it. Money was discussed, and my friend told the lady and the rest of the family to talk amongst themselves in private to determine what they wanted to do and if they came to a decision to let him know.
My friend went about his daily life, the family took the time they needed and then agreed to let it go. Friend left a deposit, and then we worked on getting the extra parts/bus out of there the following Friday. Then this past Saturday we went to the house to sort out the logistics, which was when the mother and rest of the family who was there suggested we didn't need to tow it, and could drive it home instead. |
