Indiana- it was sitting in a barn prior to being moved outside. So, there may have been a roof leak in the barn - plus sitting outside under pine trees isn't the best either. But may have saved it more then sitting out in a field.

That is some nasty ass rust. How does the whole front of the roof rot away like that? Even if the carcas isn't worth much the parts alone on that thing make it worth almost $2k. Very nice indeed.

as you can see the front roof - rain gutter, fresh air intake is pretty nasty-
the cargo floor /rocker area (pass. side) is rusted out, the engine lid hinge carrier is pretty bad-

Cool

storage is an issue for sure- small house, small 2-car garage in housing development.. Confused which sometimes is a blessing- because i don't have 14 vw carcasses scattered around the property.
the guy was very cool- creeped me out at first-never really looked me in the eye... but as we were talking I think he got more comfortable. He told me it was purchased new from Speedway VW - which is still in Indy, and ended up at the Nobelsville Transportation Museum sometime later. When he purchased it in the 80s, from someone at the museum (for $300.00), it was in good condition, ran and everything. He had it stored in a barn for a few yrs. then moved it out into the elements- which have not been kind to it at all...not bad- but def. worse then my '56.
when we were ready to leave (had my son with me) he said he wanted to show us something..we walked down a path for a bit and came upon an old olk tree, which he and his brother (lives on the property also) had gutted out and constructed a tree house for their grandkids that copied Winnie the Poohs house from the stories... Shocked That in itself was pretty awesome..you could even climb the ladder to the top outlook. Laughing
Hopefully I can post pics this a.m. before my meeting.

Just got back- man what a trip. Here's the scoop- I have pics- but cannot download them until tomorrow-

'56 Dove Blue Kombi
Title states VIN# as 181176 - but as far as I can tell (the Vin stamped was 19XXXX - since the rims are date-stamped 7/56
Gen. Stand # - 1493115
Bubble Tail Lights
Reflectors (there but cracked)
Crank Apron
2-position rear hatch (rusted bottom edge)
Engine Hatch- (hinge carrier pretty rusted)
Square Tranny Tube
Thin Gas Flap w/ rubber body seal
Both Front/ rear pressed bumpers
Middle Seat
Front Rubber Mat
Cargo floor rotted along cargo door edge
Pass. Door unable to open
Drivers door rusted thru at bottom edge
Front Rain gutter rotted
Fresh air vent overhang - rotted
Card sun visor

Hopefully in a few days I will be able to pick it up- the guy needs to clean out some other parts.

Title is in my posession and he's looking for the owners manual that came with it.
