Sell pg/sg, get a lot of money and finish the 13 windows.Pgsg is a very cool project but with 36 hp and you have to spend too much money to restore its in the right way. 13 windows is an easy project with more hp and you have not problems to find parts.Pgsg could be only a garage queen.
But it is only my opinion because some yeras ago I was in the same position (57 Pgsg versus 64 kombi) and finally I decided for a 64 kombi. And I'm really satisfied. |

I can't believe this is even a debate...but then, I guess you have your answer right there in your question? |

If you can't do the metal work get rid of it, it will cost a fortune. They also are not practical for intense use unless you upgrade everything, gear box, engine, brakes.
I had a 58 and loved it, with its crash box and vintage performance engine, but I never drove it because people on the freeways here are colossal assholes and it just could not keep up with traffic. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

Well, yeah if you need a daily driver, the newer the better. Then why stop at 1964 technology? 1971 bay window is a good ride on a freeway, 1972 with 66 hp is better yet. (see where I'm going here?)
But for cool factor and overall beauty, the earlier the better, in my book. EVERY YEAR older brings more early cool funkiness.
Braukuche is right, tho, if you want 1964 performance, you won't get it without the big nut tranny. then you might feel like you need to STOP from 65mph, too...
I face this with my December 1955 single cab. 36's are such toy motors, I'm getting it driving with a stock looking 40hp STALE AIR. I hope it will be happy with the stock tranny and gearing. But my truck is so original it seems a waste to make it all modern. But I'm sure, a 20 mile trip to Home Depot will be a long trip...
Just follow your best emotional feelings here, because none of it makes sense any other way. I am not one that looks to Consumers Reports for auto buying advice.

Bolting in a later engine and trans and better brakes is not a big deal, since it can easily be changed back to stock if desired.
Build the drivetrain up to modern-ish specs and enjoy. _________________ nothing |

Yep.
My '66 w/FF trans & new 1500 rolls along great at 60-65 mph in the flat lands, but in the hills, down to 40 mph up hill. And some people are assholes on the road in every state.
Can you stash it away, or do you need the $$$ back that you put into it A.S.A.P. ??
Sure most folks say sell the "NEWER" Bus , as if the 13 is some ugy cousin, it's a SPLIT, just like the '57. If I was closer to DRIVING the 13, I'd get it done & on the road, selling it to take on a way longer term project, that you won't be DRIVING for years, no.
Last year I found a really nice middle seat for that '57, Green seat for a pg/sg '56/'57, it was mentioned that I should hold onto the seat until I found and bought the Bus it went to..... yea, no. That $$ bought a tranny for my Doka, which I then DROVE all last summer.
For me, it's all about being behind the wheel....... _________________ Tom

Exactly what I did to my '62 DC within the last couple years: big nut RGB with a taller-geared center section, larger engine, and even disc brakes up front (and of course, raised it up to stock height like an adult haha - pipe down, I'm just joshing, nancies.) I don't regret it at all; it's not something terribly visible, with the exception of the Vintage Speed exhaust; and I can safely and enjoyably keep up with modern-day traffic.
Do what you want to your bus, but don't forget to enjoy it! _________________ ,,Wenige Menschen denken, und doch wollen alle entscheiden.'' -der Alte Fritz

I modernized my mostly original '59 SO23, big nut, 1800 stroker, 205 thick walled radials and front disc brakes becuase I like to go camping and want to increase my odds of making it there and back. So like others said you can go through all the work to modernize it, but you still have the metal work to do. My 58 PG was ratty when I got it an I had to do a lot of welding, but I did it myself. Maybe you might want to get yourself a mig and learn? _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

I guess the biggest thing is i have no experience with body work and i have alot of other projects already. I also could use the money to pay a credit card off, get a new roof on the house and I'd also like to buy the 47 willys truck that my grandpa built almost 30 years ago. He passed in '98 so it's a sentimental thing and I'd like to keep it in the family. I've already got a rust bucket '67 dc that i someday hope to do a full restore on and I've also got a '67 so42 that needs the rest of the mechanics finished before its road worthy, so there's no shortage of projects and i don't know if i should add another to the list. _________________ '70 ghia

Sell it and use the dough for the things you need. Done.
Also, oddly enough I was in Southern MN this week and found a late 64 walk through standard. Figuring out how to get it home now. _________________ nothing |

Southwestern part of the state. I was at a family gathering when my aunt and uncle told me to go around back of the building and look down the alley. There it sat. Uncle knows the owner, and it needs to go. There is another one in the garage, but it sounds like it may be a vanagon. _________________ nothing |

I knew it! I sold that '64 to that guy. Also sold him the front seats for it. Sad to hear he never got around to fixing it. I found that bus, 2 bay windows and a couple late beetles over by fairmont. _________________ '70 ghia
