Nice story. Glad someone got it who will appreciate it for the time capsule it is.
So, where are pictures of the extra bus? Any story on that one? |
It was a barndoor deluxe
No, I'm kidding. I misworded that. I meant as in we went to work on getting the extra parts/THIS bus out.
All of the interior panels, interior deluxe trim, middle seat, and a set of bumpers were in the attic.
The bus simply needed some tight-maneuvering to push it out. |

The widows son would occasionally start the bus up, put stabilizer in the tank, and clean it down. On Friday when we were there to pick it up, it was mentioned that it would be towed the 10 minutes to its new home, and the family without hesitation said "It still runs and drives, why not drive it?" which is exactly what was done. My friend, the new owner, drove it home under its own power. |
Does the clock work and was it the right time? It takes a long time but the clock will run the battery dead. |

I looked at that Westy in the middle of November 2019. Decent bus, split bench seat, originally Velvet Green, had 80% of the westy specific stuff, no fridge.
My buddy Eric and I sniffed around it for a bit and then I asked for a price.
Guy says "30". I say "thousand or three thousand?", he say's "30,000". I say, "time to go"..... That's where I left it.
I believe the CL listing was for $6k a few months ago. _________________ Wanted : January '57 Palm Green Sand Green Bus Parts - Middle and Rear Seat Frames - flat back. I have original seat covers but would consider covered frames.

these american picker and gas monkey type of vehicle flipper TV shows now have maw and paw who have had the old VW sitting out back for 40 years now wanting top dollar when you ask about it. a friend found a 64 single cab a while back, rusty as hell but complete, and the guy said he wanted $15K for it. it got parked in 1982. _________________ Missouri Micros |

So, this one got scrapped. Long story, and I am blown away that the owner didn't call around amongst the fellow VW guys in the area to see if anyone wanted it, or the parts. Look closely, and there is at least one side gate, both treasure chest doors, and a bunch of other parts stuffed in there.
And the answer is, no. Not allowed to touch it, or take any parts. They even escorted me into the yard to take the pictures. Have been selling metal, buying metal, and buying SCRAP from this place for over 20 years. Doesn't matter. I offered to buy just the parts, not the carcass. Nope. Rules, safety, regulations, blah, blah, blah.

Nope. Can't touch it. It will likely be crushed into a cube later this week. Then off to South East Asia to make some Kia fenders or something. _________________ nothing |

It is now owned by a larger corporation, with lawyers and insurance hand-wringers making sure to limit exposure, no matter how minor. _________________ nothing |

Yes, pretty sad. But part of the problem is guys cutting them up and selling the parts are convinced they can get more money. Maybe could, if you could sell damned near every part. But realistically, that might be 20 or more transactions and take years.
On the individual level, I figure a lot of these people are using drugs and just see some short term gain and never actually figure the math.
He cut the gates and hinges off, left the rear corners. Duh.
Guy that cut it up coulda sold the whole thing for $1000 and been totally done earning his money. _________________ Al Brase

That does happen, but in this case it didn't. I have known of this truck for over 25 years. The roof was cut off in the late 90's I think. The rest sat in a local junkyard until late last summer, when it was sold along with another truck as a package deal. A few parts off of this carcass were used for the rebuild of the other truck, then this one was scrapped. The owner is a good guy, and does very nice restorations and custom builds. He is the retired long time owner of a local automobile repair shop. He just didn't have the foresight to ask around, apparently. _________________ nothing |

I was offered what was left of that single cab before he sent it to the scrappers. I passed on it as he took essentially everything from it for the other single cab. So he did offer it to some people before it was sent there, not sure why he didn’t offer it to you. |
