Finally got the muffler that split right down the middle replaced. Just recently found out that it's actually off of a 74 bus. Apparently a common mod on aircooled westys because I found another one sitting in a junkyard Smile . So I picked it up for 30 bucks and took my wire brush to it. Nice and shiny and no holes! Very Happy Then took some high heat brake caliper paint that says it will withstand 900 degrees C. We'll see about that. But it's nice, shiny and black. Dancing Only trouble I had was that the tailpipe itself had gotten bent 180 degrees when the wrecker ripped the engine out. So out came the trusty angle grinder and went and bought a nice exhaust tip from my FLAPS. It doesn't bend out towards the rear of the van now it just goes out the side and aims down. And man oh man is that top bolt on the right hand heater box with the tin in a bitch to do. Evil or Very Mad Had to cut one of my 13mm open end wrenches down to an inch and a half long just to get it in there. Rolling Eyes Sure is quiet now though. I'll post some pics soon.

I thought Pocket Bikes were the Vanagon owners best friends?

Checked the local yards. Fortunately my local guy has 2 in stock an 81 & an 80. The one had the 74 on it but the other had the stock 81 setup on it with all the tubes and crap. But keep an eye out and you can always pick one up off of a 74.

I put an aftermarket unit on my air cooled Vanagon 80. Other than the cat frying off the black paint....flame thrower cat burning the guts out of it

Actually, Scott, that looks a bit different than the '74 I pulled off of my van. The one I had had the flanges embedded in the muffler body, like the one here.
The one you have looks like it may clear the heater downtubes without having to mangle them much. Is that the case?

I wouldn't really know as I didn't install it the first go round. Wouldn't even know what an original downtube looks like so I'm not alot of use in that department but the don't look that mangled. Eh?
