PostPosted: Sun Apr 02, 2006 7:03 am    Post subject: Spare Tire Reply with quote

I didn't see this when I searched nor in the tire sticky. I am not looking for a brand of tire, I am simply looking for how I might obtain a ready to go spare tire rim and all?

Is there a vendor that will sell a ready to go spare? Rim, tire, and case?

I would prefer to store it in the bus as opposed to the nose.

I saw some pics somewhere where it looked like someone had theirs in a hard case?

If there are no spare tires ready to go for sale, where would I start to find a rim?

Another thought would be to go to a VW show up there someplace and plan on buying another wheel for $10-20. I gave away 4 of them a while ago as I ran out of space in my garage.

Then just buy an additional tire to match what you have and just put the spare into the tire rotation schedule.

VDubtech is over there by you someplace and probably has a dozen spares. Tell him you want the plastic cover for the rear to mount it correctly in your bus. He will know what that is.

Glad your bus is working out for you. Great head turning quotient.

The spare is strapped into the left rear corner. Here is the page from an owners manual:

You will notice it says "To remove it, take off the cover......."

Here is what the cover looks like:

The 68-72 westy at least had a mustard vinyl soft slipcover that went over the tire, not sure about the '73.

When I was ready to take my first long (75 mile) journey in the bus I also did not have a spare. Contacted my local bus club Strictly Vintage 2s ( www.sv2s.com ) and several members offerred an extra rim and/or tire that they had sitting around. For free. (Thanks Louis/Tribalbus!) You might try the same in your area.

And even with your new spare tire, get AAA Plus. 100 mile tows for free.

VDUBTECH or myself should have a bay/vanagon spare and or hard case.

try to contact him 1st, as he has parted tons of VW s in the last 12+ months. but if he doesn't have one I can probably swing a spare your way. [email protected]

either way Vdubtech or myself are in Syracuse just an hour+/- east from Rochester.

you can also try www.flrvwc.com (which appears to be down atm) or swing by Scottsville april 22nd? for an open VW swap meet at http://www.nevintage.com/
