1973 movie "The Seven-Ups" filmed in New York City. NYC police detective Buddy (Roy Scheider) investigates who killed his partner. Car chase sequence is superb, from which I took these screen shots. Many VWs being passed, or parked. Buddy chases the antagonists in his grey 1973 Pontiac Ventura (brand version of Chevy Nova) who are driving a "midnight blue" black 1973 Pontiac Grand Ville 4-door sedan. Baddies are Bo and Moon (played by actual stunt driver Bill Hickman who also drove the black Dodge Charger in the "Bullitt" car chase; and Richard Lynch). IMO Buddy's engine sound has been partially dubbed in from Bullitt's Mustang from that movie's car chase, complete with engine shifting pauses despite the Ventura being an automatic (!?).
Green/white Splittie Deluxe parked on southbound side of Riverside Drive which is located on the west side of Manhattan; viewed looking south.
Red Splittie Deluxe parked on NB side of Riverside Drive, as seen by Buddy in the Ventura 2 cars behind the Grand Ville.
Blue/white Splittie Deluxe parked, with the Grand Ville speeding past. |

In The French Connection with Gene Hackman, there is a Sea Blue and White 13 window parked right next to the subway entrance in the chase scene footage. |
EverettB has a nearly identical shot to mine:
Earlier in the chase segment, New York City Detective Popeye Doyle (Gene Hackman) commandeers a 1971 Pontiac Lemans to intercept the assassin who is fleeing in the overhead elevated ("el") railway. He is driving along 86th Street in Brooklyn at high speed, and sideswipe crashes into a wall. In the distance is a blue Splittie. I wonder if it's the same one as shown above? He passes by the Splittie and turns left.
Also seen in the chase segment:
Doyle stops at the first el station where the train is supposed to stop. The Bus in background has its first side window patched. Looks like it's the same one I show farther down, seen earlier in the movie.
The assassin is forcing the el train motorman at gunpoint not to stop, so Doyle rushes back down to the Pontiac and continues the pursuit. A green Splittie is seen parked on a side street.
Here's that (same?) Bus with patched side window at western (Manhattan) end of the Brooklyn Bridge:
Yellow bus parked in Brooklyn as Detectives Doyle and his partner Buddy Russo (Roy Scheider) follow one of the main characters Sal Boca (Tony Lo Bianco).
Doyle and Russo follow Boca as he parks and gets out of his car on the left. There's a dark red Splittie parked in the distance.
Part of the movie takes place in Marseille, France. In that city's harbor area, there's a red Kombi or logo'd panel van on the far side. Main character Alain Charnier (Fernando Rey) on left. |

Belgian movie from 1956 "The Three from the Filling Station" with some musical scenes, about 3 young men who run a small, run-down gas station. They eventually clean it up, but near the beginning of the movie they hold an open house celebration. A blue Barndoor Kombi drives in, full of women who get out and dance with the men in the left background wearing the dark uniforms. Sign on top of the Bus is "Eine Fahrt in unser'm Bus macht das Reisen zum Genuss!"- A drive in our bus makes travel a pleasure. geraldcrewcab has similar shots in his gallery. Shiny tires 20 years before Armor-All: silicone lube?
At the end of the movie, there's a rush to get gas at the station. The "gasoline brand" Berolin is derived from the movie studio name Berolina. |

Is this a Barndoor or a late '50's Euro with aftermarket "Lucas"-style blinkers? I see a "small" roof front overhang but thought the post-barndoors had a longer overhang.
TV show "Counting Cars" based in Las Vegas, Nevada. 2017 S7 E13 "Get your motor running" has the shop's motorcycle expert builder Shannon (left) and ace painter Ryan in front of the blue Kombi. |

Pale grey mid 1960's single-cab pickup in "The Olsen Gang" (original Danish title Olsen-banden), 1968. Filmed in Copenhagen, Denmark. The commandeered Ford driver's ed car swerves to avoid the pickup as it starts its left turn. There's a dark green or black early Notchback parked to the left.

In the movie "The Mechanic" (1972), veteran assassin (aka hit man, mechanic) Arthur Bishop (Charles Bronson) teaches Steve McKenna (Jan-Michael Vincent) the skills of his profession. Blue splittie in left background while Bishop makes a phone call.

"The Munsters" TV show, "Hot Rod Herman" season 1, episode 36 from 1965. Eddie Munster (Butch Patrick) tells his dad Herman (Fred Gwynne) that he thinks dad can beat the father of his child friend at the drag strip. Herman and Eddie drive the Munsters Koach family car to the Mockingbird Heights Drag Strip, where there's an early 1960's Kombi parked in background. The location was the Lions Drag Strip in Wilmington/Long Beach, California.
Edit: The day after I posted this photo, I attended the "Dead Man's Curve" hotrod event in Mahwah, New Jersey which had a VW show "Aircooled Nationals" in the program. In the event location's hotel exhibit hall, Butch Patrick was there along with the Munsters Koach, and the Drag-U-La which was also premiered in that same episode. When there was a brief lull with attendees who were requesting autographs from Butch, I went over and said to him I just saw that episode on TV. I asked him how he liked riding in the cab next to his pop. He said "he usually drove in the rumble seat way in the back". I also asked if the displayed cars were the actual ones filmed in that episode, and he said that this Koach was a 3rd replica, but the Drag-U-La was the real thing.

American TV show "MacGyver", season 2, episode 22 named "For Love or Money". MacGyver (Richard Dean Anderson) and a female agent he despises (actress Deborah Adair) are sent to Czechoslovakia, posing as a married couple to infiltrate a psychiatric hospital there to free a human rights activist. The agent receives a neglected Citroen 2CV from her European contact as her transportation, and drops off MacGyver at the hospital. The pickup is carrying supplies for the hospital. Appears to have large round "trailer" taillamps. MacGyver is about to walk up the stairs to improvise his access to the activist. The black "stick" at right is the windshield wiper as seen from inside the 2CV. |
