Yesterday I was thrilled to find a fellow with a business that took me back 50 years!

I was in need of a alternator repair on the Buggy. The present one was rattling on idle and I could duplicate the sound by wiggling the pulley... bearings are gone.

Back in my youth we would go to Corbett's Auto Electric and buy two bearings, polish the commutator/slip rings and replace the brushes while we were in there. Starters, generators and alternators, didn't matter, $15 to $18 and away you went. Now all you can get is a remanufactured at $200 - $300 if someone can even find one for our old VWs.

For years now I have been driving through a little one horse town and there is a sign "Erskine Auto Electric" on the roadside. Thought maybe the sign was missed on town cleanup in the past. Time to check it out! Wow! A blast from the past and I don't mean some junky, dusty cobweb infested place either! It was just like walking into the shop in my youth! The place was well stocked, clean, neat and well kept, friendly and very helpful fellow "Been here for many years." he said.

Took a look at my 51 year old alternator, went back and pulled open a few drawers and came back with two bearings and a set of brushes. $23 total with tax!

Sweet! Very Happy
