Hi Gang- Just picked up my 1964 Notchback, and I have a few questions. This appears to have been built in late '64- May or June. It's definitely an "S" model, it still has the original "Premium/ Super!" sticker by the gasoline fill.
BUT- it has ORIGINAL push pull switches (not a retrofit) and white needle gauges. A metal tag under the hood says it was delivered in France.
Since I want this to be a 100% bone stock correct restoration, I need to know if the white needle gauges are correct. If memory serves me right, in late 1964 they went to white gauges at the same time they ceased push button production. Correct?
Now, what I really am wanting to know is this: As a car delivered in France in 1964, what are the upholstery options and lighting requirements? i know that in Fr they run yellow headlamps. Was that true in 1964? What lenses should the side markers have? Turnsignals? Taillamps? Any special reflectors or other equipment mandated in France?
Any info would be appreciated. Would all of this appear on a "birth certificate"?
And finally- anyone out there with French spec parts for sale? Very Happy

I believe that the white needle gauges went in when the newer style headlamp/wiper knobs went in. You are correct on that.

Upholstery options for your car, depending on the color, would be grey, brown or olive cord in cloth or grey, brown, olive or red cord for the leatherette. Your birth certificate will tell you which one specifically.

I also believe that the french type 3's had different reflectors, although I don't remember if it is those oversized looking ones or the smaller glass ones. I'm sure either Everett or Jason can tell us exactly.

Good luck, and we expect to see pictures soon!

The oversized reflectors are Sweedish market only if I recall and are an M code. Those funky small dimly ones that have been popping up latley are after market ones I belive? I think your reflectors should be standard ones Tram, someone help me if I recall wrong. It would be cool if france had the yellow lights in 64 as requirements. Id run them anyway! Or maybe get some concave ones Wink

Didnt france switch to yellow to help preserve the national monuments? Or was it a blinding white light thing?

I don't know if white gauges came in at the exact same time as the push/pull switches but I believe they basically go together.

The push/pull switches start at chassis # 0 423 140

French Type 3s had the red/white side marker lenses.

I think the rear reflectors were the same but I am not 100% sure.
There is a French Type 34 that had extra reflectors bolted to the back bumper but that might not apply to regular Type 3s.

It should have yellow headlight bulbs in the standard Euro headlights.

The upholstery should be the same as a standard German model Type 3.

All right then, the VIN on this one is 0437424, so it's an early production push/ pull switch car. Would the German issue cars have had vinyl or cloth interiors?

Hmm, good question.

I would assume vinyl unless it was special ordered.

You're wrong on the reflectors Jason Laughing Laughing
France used these funky reflectors:

Good luck finding them. Oh, did I mention I have a pair sitting here on my desk? I picked them up on eBay a couple months ago, from France. The ones I have are the only one's I've ever seen in person. Mr. Warehouse bought a set in France a couple years ago. The picture above is his set. Mine are mounted in the standard "N" style housings, but are interchageable to the "S" type. Looks like I have more and more of what you need Laughing Laughing Laughing You're going to end up owing me a lot before this is all done.

Vintage concave Cibie lights are also as hard to find as hens teeth. I bought one on eBay and it took me 3 years to find another. I had to buy a large lot of lights just to get the one headlight I wanted. I paid big bucks, but got even more out of selling everything else individually. This one isn't mine either, just lifted from the Gallery. My wife is out of town with my digital camera until tomorrow, so I can't take any pictures of my stuff.

Yes, indeed. Those ARE the reflectors I was thinking of, Neil. And, of course, you have Cibie headlights. Laughing

Wonder why my bunghole is starting to ache? Think

SAY!!! You don't need any "N" model doors, by chance, do you?

Well, when Jacin found them we talked to some French guy who said that they are all over there in France and they were French issue. We cannot guarantee that but thats what we are told. We need to see some in the box....

I know this is no picture but it looks like France did have some sort of special reflectors... This is taken from the Type 3 M-Code List.

281 Special reflectors and yellow headlamp bulbs
up to Chassis No. 316 500 000 311-318, 361-368 France, Algeria Morocco, etc.

I have a pair of these cibie headlight, and the relector inside the headlight is a chrome film that is peeling. Is there anyone out there that can restore these for me? I will get pics when I get back home.

Just have the reflectors rechromed. Or sand them and paint them with "chrome" paint like most people do, not as shinny though.

It came from Canada that way. Hoestly I dont know. The whole drivers side had new parts cuz it looked like it was hit or fixed. The passenger side though had all OG parts like the Cibie and the rounded bullet. I kept it just cuz I havent seen one before.

What do you guys think
the concaved Cibies are worth, Ive had a set for about 15 years with the yellow bulbs in them and they're in great shape, I only put them on the car when I use to show it otherwise they just sat in my attic.

Back when I was looking for them I would have paid a couple hundred for a perfect set. Now that I already have some, I'd pay no more than $50.
