Hello folks, could anyone tell me if the original factory tail heart lens of the 1954 oval window bugs were made of plastic or glass? Thanks for the answers.

Hi, The og lenses are glass and repro plastic.

Cheers Paul.

edit...Sorry I was talking about the small oval lense from heart lights and not the heart lense itself.

Cheers Paul.

They go on post split semaphore cars. They were used through 1954 on US cars.

This was discussed prior, on the subject of "if amber colored heart lenses ever existed". At that time it was mentioned that heart lenses were made in glass and plastic. A guy advertised a glass heart lens here in amber for sale and I bought it to both verify it was glass and for the color. It arrived in an amber color yes, but it was plastic, heavy like glass, but plastic. So, I've yet out of hundreds I've seen to find a heart lense in glass, but if someone can say otherwise it would be great to know. These heart lenses also used a heart shaped rubber gasket which I will have out this summer. But, as for the rear facing lense, those were glass only I believe, but again if anyone knows otherwise please mention, thanks.

Rather than just typing "wrong" ( And I admit I was ) you may want to help the chap buy answering his question.

Cheers Paul.

You're correct.........I should have. Heart brake lights are ALWAYS plastic........RED (maybe Amber) but always plastic. The running lights are always glass. I apologize. I was upset that you had stated the wrong information as a fact, rather than having the concern to correct the misinformation that I should have had. Embarassed

Is there any way other than adding accessory brake lights to have the brake lights seen better?

Remove the diffusers. Clean the contacts.
For vehicles with early egg or heart taillights, switch the bulbholders around to illuminate the brakelight through the running light lens and vice versa.

I thought of switching the wires so the brake light would be running lights, but I also didn't want to look like a jack ass either so I got this.

PostPosted: Sun May 07, 2006 7:26 am    Post subject: Heart top lenses-glass versus plastic Reply with quote

The top lenses were always plastic and original bottom always glass.

In my experience, buying parts in Europe and especially Germany, the term "glass" is commonly used for lens - and does not necessarily delineate what the lens is made of.

So, as an example, semaphore lenses were always plastic and in communcating with German sellers I would always call a semaphore lens "winker glass" as would they.
