Just got my engine back into my 71 Super Beetle after a long winter. I thought I had all the wires labeled. I have a generator and an external voltage regulator under the back seat. Engine starts and runs, but the generator light is on. I have the fat wire to D+ and both the smaller green and brown wires to DF. When I checked to wiring diagram, it shows the brown wire going to the screw at the back of the generator. Is that right? I don't remember a wire being there.

Yes the brown is a ground wire and should not be on the DF... it goes to the screw.

Try that and see.... you may need to "polarize" the generator.

Thanks for the quick response. I tried to polarize the generator,,, it barely spun. I remember polarizing the generator on my 63 and it spun very fast.

The idea is not to spin it at all.. or very long... a quick "touch" of the wires is all it takes to polarize it.
