The only thing is how do you keep the look without further deterioration.

The whole Patina thing has gone way too far. A beat up piece of shit does not have patina. It's a beat up piece of shit. That car is a good base for a restoration, Not a coat of wax.

Although I am a fan of cars with a certain patina, I have to agree that word is over used. And whats up with rat-rods? Rolling Eyes I'm down with rodding out a car, but it seems as though every hack out there with a half assed car tries to justify it by calling it a rat rod Question

if you took the rest of the black respray off and brought it down to coral and buffed it it'd be pretty hot...but as it stands it's pretty ugly...all orig. metal though.

I'm a restorer so I understand "patina" and "rat rods".

I'd rather see someone keep the "patina" on a nice straight unmolested Oval rather than doing a hack job on it themselves. That way there's not layers and layers of half-assed bodywork or rattle can crap to get in the way of REAL bodywork and paint.

REAL bodywork and paint takes REAL time and REAL money. I wouldn't suggest that anyone "rat rod" a nice straight original VW but there are some cars out there that are a waste of a REAL restoration, cars that have been hit in the front, hit in the back, rusty everywhere all at the same time. Build a jalopy out of it and have a good time!

There's a way to build a good rat-rod. It can be a blank slate for creativity but half-assed mods and workmanship don't cut it, in fact it takes talent to do a good relic job and make the car look like a dry lakes survivor from 1953, that's a bit o' revisionist history there... show me a VW lakes car from the '50s! Still, you can cop the look. Enamel with hardener and flatting agent over good bodywork is the way to go IMHO. Another way is to shoot the whole car, add gloss hardener, wet-sand the whole works out but DON'T rub it. Scotch Brite hard to sand areas like inside the drip rails, just knock the gloss off. The advantage is that a flat paint job can be shot without a paint booth, just blow it on and sand the crud and the bugs out later!

That Oval needs a shiny coat of Coral Red IMHO. NOT rat rod material!

The idea is to bring more Bugs back, not to butcher anything worth saving.

So true I added it to my sig! If its original paint that has been touched up, leave the "patina" alone. That thing looks like a retarded graffiti artist had a siezure while tagging it.
