Simple enough question.

A friend just put on in his 63 Ghia, still 6 volts, can can't seem to static time it.

I static timed mine just to get it in the ballpark range so it would start....then used a strobe.

Does the pertronix work with a 6v?

I think the way they work involves some induction, and induction is dependent on time-varying magnetic fields. The rotor has be be moving to give an accurate signal. I'm may be more like an ECKO unit, like a hall effect unit, but active circuitry. In that case, it might have a trigger based on proximity of a magnet to the sensor.

Pertronix 1845N6 for 40hp "Big Cap" distributors. The N6 is for Negative ground 6 volt.

Pertronix 1844N6 fits Bosch VJ4BR8, VJR4BR25, 019, 010 and 383 for 6 volt applications.

BTW... these are all special order since nobody stocks them.

after a very short period of time the unit will turn off if it does not sense the magnetic pulse. This is to protect the circuit from overheating and self destruction. That may complicate static timming.

I have done it - As mentioned - you do it just to get it close - I hooked up the light and rotated the crank till it lit. It is not suggested to do this for any length of time - I was not aware that it had a "overheat" mechanism and was always under teh impression that you can smoke the unit if you leave it in a certain position for minutes. I have abused several Pertronixs and have not ruined one yet.

maybe the disc isn't all the way down or upside down or something? I can't think of a reason why one ~~couldn't~~ static time one; unless the disc needs to be travelling fast enough to "sweep" the pickup and transmit the spark, but I kinda doubt that.

Any good electonic ignition should be close to "zero rpm fire".All o.e. are zero rpm fire. If they're not, there's no chance for stable low rpm cranking spark.
