i may be wrong, but i think only the extreme late vanagons had the depressed circle on the rear deck lid. I know my 86 dont have it. Ive still been kickin the idea of gettin one around even without the depression. _________________ 86 vanagon GL

My 85 did not have that until I replaced my damaged rear lid with a later one. I like that lamp. How does it fasten? Looks like where the stud is supposed to be, there are wires. So how do you keep it from falling out?

You could just drill a hole in the rear panel to pass the wire. Use some good double stick to attach it with and your done.
Did you notice that the bus in the pic has bulbs in the socket usually left empty on the rear tail lights? I guess in other markets that was a " fog light option" We can alter ours to put bulbs in I believe, i've looked it over a few times, just not motivated. _________________ Imagine that, theres not an "h" in either Westfalia or Syncro? |

I'm not huge on the logo light, but it is true you can put bulbs in the un-used sockets. Makes the tail lights a lot brighter and safer!! _________________ '89 Syncro Westy

Are the empty sockets Running lights, or Brake Lights?
I would love more Brake Lights!

I was thinking the same fate would happen to mine if I got one...... _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

Reguarding the rear fog light, It is not just put a bulb in, you have to solder a short wire to the base of the bulb and then hook it to the brake light lead on the bulb holder. Not hard to do at all. I have seen the bulbs with wires attached and instructions for sale on e bay. _________________ 86 GL Running

I wonder how hard it would be to build it 'properly'.
I will have to pull it apart this weekend, and take a look.

To build it properly I think you will need a little metal whatchmacallit. Look in the hole where the other lights go. You'll see what I mean. Once you have that part, you would have to pull the metal 'circuit board' (not really a circuit board, but not sure what to call it!) off the back of the housing, put the metal thingy in, and re-assemble.
Maybe scavenge the parts off some old borken lenses.
The extra lights are running lights, not brake lights. If you want brighter brake lights look into the halogen bulbs. Real bright, just can't leave them on to long. Fine for brake and backup lights, just not for the ones that are on all the time.
I have the extra bulbs in mine. It makes the van much more visible at night. That's a good thing! _________________ '89 Syncro Westy

I might get one for third brake but I don't have the emblem so I aint drilling nuttin'! Oh well. But I voted yes. I also was wondering about that bulb spot? Might have a little project soon. _________________ 1987 Wolfsburg T25 still riding out. A bunch of other VW's passed on... |

I'd like to get one, and mount it to the rear shelf, so no one can steal it, but it will shine through the tinted glass. People will say "Hey look! Its a VW symbol shinning through the glass!! Perhaps we should stop to avoid a collision!!" Yes, thats what they'll all say. _________________ Firebug AAC
