I suspect lots of people have seen this already. They don't state the speed, but theres not much left of the passenger sections.

that doka has to be hauling! Any estimates on how fast?
What I need to estimate this, is to figure out how much they slowed time down. |

I've seen other crash test videos that showed vanagons to fare pretty well against an offset frontal.
Wish I had the URL for you.

Okay, just how realistic is this crash test? Last I checked, unless you are drunk or something, you should never be driving that fast into a solid wall. Okay so it didn't do to well. I can see why, then agian if you usually do hit something straight on it will usually give. I HOPE! |

I seen some pics a few years ago of a head on between a vanagon and a Volvo, the volvo was peeled open like a tin can while the vanagon faired pretty good.
I'll be sure to steer clear of cement walls on my travels this summer. |

Whenever safety and vanagons are brought up, someone invariably mentions the infamous volvo crash test. This is NOT a testament to the safety of a vanagon. What it means is that the vanagon does not have a crumple zone, and as such, all crash forces are going into the passengers. A volvo (and pretty much every modern passenger car) is a superior car in terms of safety. Assuming people in that volvo would have died, that still means people died. This is not a good thing.
I also find it really sad when people do the whole "at least i would live" thing. That is the logic that perpetuates 7,000lb SUVs which are actually a step back in safety (and worse than vanagons, i think). They just use sheer mass and brute force over intelligent design in the name of "safety". If you believe that is good enough, you should have a MAC truck for your daily driver.
Most people who drive vanagons seem to have a bit more of a world view and are more open minded about how their actions impact others. Please don't fool yourselves into thinking that a vanagon is an inherently safe vehicle. It isn't. It does inspire safe driving, though, which is way more important, fortunately (something no SUV can claim). Understand this about your vehicle, and drive accordingly.
I still love my van, but i make no illusions about it's safety. I drive defensively and (relatively) slowly.
Sorry, this is a touchy point for me for some reason. All this is why i don't like "Big bumpers", either. Brute force - not intelligent design. If someone would design something that would actually make the van safer, rather than just protecting a paintjob, i'd be all over it.
Anyway, not a personal attack by any means. Just my views on the matter.

My "perspective" mantra:
A Volkswagen Vanagon is just a material thing,
As such, it is of the earth,
And if i need to, I can let my Van go. |

I'm with you WBX. For a long time I didn't want to get a Vanagon solely based on its safety performance (or lack thereof). I have taken to driving really carefully, upgraded the tires, shocks, and headlights. I want to get some big brakes going too, which is probably most important. I guess seeing videos like that is sobering if nothing else. I have found that the high driver postition allows for a lot of visibility which is good. Drive safely and have fun my peeps.

How did they get it to go that fast? Steep hill? And for those of you that want to make your Vanagon more safe, Just get a couple of those water barrel baricades, and strap them to the front of your vanagon. _________________ Firebug AAC

Surgeon General's Warning: Crashing any vehicle into a concrete wall at high speeds can result in injury or death. The sudden deceleration will get you if the cockpit doesn't collapse on your head first.
