Are the new Brazilian 3.875 R/P gears that are being sold for $110 as good as an original 3.88 out of a late tranny for a 12 second drag car? Or would I be better off tearing apart a few trannys until I find a good used one? _________________ 2017 Street Comp Champion - Thunder Valley Raceway Park - Noble, OK

I can't say about the Brazilian ones, but it's hard to beat a German Klinkenberg r/p. _________________ Glenn

I'd go with a used klink or ottinger. A 3.88 Glieson will be even strong in the 3.88 r/p realm for a 12 second drag car. In time they will all fracture.
Call up a reputable tranny builder and ask. That'd be good info to know. _________________ 11.92sec pump gas true daily driver. Who says it cant be done.

I do not bother with the Brazilians. There are plenty of stock German 3.88 around. I stash a few of them... 20 sets or so I have taken out of late cases. Let me know if you still need them.
You need 3.78 mainshaft too?
I do not know of anyone running Brazilian Ring/Pinions in this neck of the woods.
The German stocks are hard to beat. |

The Brazilian ones are somewhat brittle and will break fairly quickly in drag race use, although they're OK for lower horsepower road race use. The 3.88G has proven more reliable than the 3.88K for drag racing (although I would certainly agree that the 4.37K is much stronger than the 4.37G). |

The bad one has a G831 on it . Is that the Glieson?
Thanks for your help. I'm still learning about tranny internals. _________________ 2017 Street Comp Champion - Thunder Valley Raceway Park - Noble, OK

What trannies tended to have 3.88? I would like a set myself. I have a 73 IRS manual from a standard beetle & a '65 swing axle tranny. Is there a way, with out tearing them apart, to tell if any of them had a 3.88 that I could use in my '66? Is it even possible to put the 3.88 r&P from a later swing axle into an IRS? I am assuming this is a huge jobe regardless? _________________ Greg

NO, you have it backwards. The G831 is the absolute strongest Type 1 R&P ever made. |
