Yesterday J. and myself extracted this bus from the far reaches of the East Coast syndicate. It has been off the road since 74, got it from the second owner who never messed with it at all. It is a swivel seat, missing the seat and track, so I'm gonna need one of those (Lind). BUt it has OG safaris and there must have been a gas heater. The Logos are under the primer that someone just sprayed over everything. The bus has some rust, but hopefully with going through all the mechanicals it could hit the trails of NJ in July, hopefully. It does run. 1961

Damn, that is a cool picture Lind. Thanks man. Does the picture show the bus as being red? This one was M-coded Grey. It has the grey roof still, I am not sure what color the body is under the primer. But the lettering is yellow.

nick is what is referred to by certain syndicates as a "risin' outlaw"

congrats on the score. right now, it looks like there will be 4 logo'd panels tearing thru the woods of NJ

Thanks, Lind.
Wow, I saw the photos and thought, gee, its neat to have a shot of the bus in early operation. Then I read further, and see that they had at least 97 BUSES in use.
Its highly unlikely that this bus is the one in the photos.
This is a sobering thought. One out of 97 buses is known to have survived.
Tough odds, there.

I also note the average MPG of the intial fleet of 27 trucks was 16.5mpg.
Remember that when you complain about your gas mileage.
Here's a shot or two from yesterday.
Check out that "Lazy Eye" turnsignal arrangement!
And, Nick, I'd have to call it Tea Colored.

Perhaps this collectable Jewel T delivery truck could give some clues to the original colors:

And dammit, gotta look closer at that primer, see if the JewelT logo is on there somewere.

there was another swivelseat panel with that funky window that has been for sale a few times over the last few years. I saw it two years ago at the show in milan, mi. I don't know that it is from that same lot of buses. also, we don't know that the entire fleet was swivel seats, and they might not have had exactly 97, the number could be more or less. (I don't believe everything I read in sales literature...)

So what's up with the seat brackets if it was a swivel seat, or were they put in later?

Bolted on.
I still haven't figured out how the seat which was in there (Full length Humpback) fit into place. Nick and I couldn't get it to line up with the added on brackets. Maybe the Humpback was just laying around the warehouse so he threw it in there.

Unfortunately, the bus in the vintage VW photos has high hinge cargo doors, this bus has low hinges...

He had the seat in when I showed up. But then I freaked and pulled it out of the way. It would be pretty cool to see the Jewel T, have to look a little closer. I wouldn't be suprised if it is on the drivers door because all the writing I found on it was right at the bottom edge, seemed like there should have been something above it.

I just told my dad about the Jewel Bus, and he said, "Oh, the coffee man, he used to come to my moms house." Pretty cool.
