|
|
HI new to the forums but I'm a long time reader. I wanted to know if anyone has "updated" a 73 style pop top with a cot, to the later, bigger kind with a fold down bed? Can it be done? Or should I just leave it the way it is? Thanks in advance. |

It might be possible with the top on there. Basically the later bed is 3/4 inch plywood, a little over 6 feet long, in two pieces, with hinges on the shorter front piece to flip it back during the day when you want more headroom in the poptop. The early bay pop top part is about two feet shorter than the later bay pop up, but you could leave an access hole in the bed if need be. How far towards the front does the hole in the bus roof extend? It comes to just behind the front seats on the later ones. The padding is just two or two and a half inch foam with a zip in cover by the way. Jeremy |

Well I'm not sure. I guess I'll have to measure it. Maybe I could just install the bed? But I was also considering changing out the tops entirely. Then maybe extend the hole if need be? I'll check the size out tomorrow morning and post my measurements. |

If you search the old forums, someone posted what would be required to install the later top on the earlier Bays. I do remember reading that the opening was different, and the modification would require extra bracing to be installed. The guy even linked some pictures of how he did it if I remember correctly. |

Do you think it would be possible to just install a bed instead of the cot? |

That was covered in the same thread I spoke of, it required a brace for the end of the bed to rest on, but seems like it wasn't a major effort. |

sure. it's just plywood, foam, and upholstery, with a couple of hinges. you will not be able to get the same size as the later bed, since the pop top is not as long, but it should be okay. go nuts. _________________ OG JHC

I live in the Elk Grove area, By South Sacramento county. I'm in Deutsch Stahl, a local VW club. Hopefully I'll be camping out at the Bug-o-rama in a couple weeks . |
