As trailers were lined up outside the gates at 7:00am there was a buzz in the air amongst the racers. With heavy rains on Friday at Kilkare Dragway some speculated the condition of the track for Sundayís event. Fortunately the National Hot Rod Association held their NHRA National Dragster Challenge on Saturday. With over 100 drag cars laying down rubber Saturday evening the Vw Pro Stocks and Pro Mods were expected to put up some record times with the cooler temperatures ranging in the mid 70ís. Unfortunately the turnout for the Pro Mod class was limited to (2) cars. Dune Buggy Dale Adams made the drive from Annapolis, MD and Aaron Creech had an easy drive coming from Germantown, OH. Unfortunately Dale Adams full time driver, his son Dale Jr. could not attend this race due to having a newborn baby at home. Taking his place is Vw Pro Stock Driver Gene Collier. Not only was Gene running Pro Stock, Pro Mod, organizing the ECPRA classes, but he also took the win over Aaron in the finals. Both drivers had difficulty getting down track and it was a peddle fest to the finish. Gene posted a 7.045/101mph to Aarons 7.153/100mph.
In the Pro Stock class every round proved to be something new. We had records being broken twice (Damon Harmon), great side by side action between Warren Skaggs (6.16) and Ollie Frey (6.17) during the 3rd round of qualifying, and the worse moment of the day came when an Oil Sump came off of a car and oiled down the track. With this being the first official race of the season for the ECPRA Pro Stocks many drivers were looking to improve upon their last event at the 2005 CB Performance Pro Stock Nationals. One of those drivers was Ollie Frey. After breaking (2) transmissions at the nationals he installed a Bus Transmission from Rancho Performance Transaxles. On his 3rd and final qualifying pass Ollie let the Pro Stock community know he was back posting a 6.179/111mph while running side by side against Warren Skaggs who posted a 6.168/110mph. Damon Harmon making the haul from Irving, TX also had something to prove. At the nationals Damon was runner up to Warren Skaggs and here in Ohio he wanted to make a statement. Damon posted a 6.166/112mph to snatch the #1 position away from Warren with just .002 separating the two drivers. As fate would have it these two would pair up against each other in the finals again.
After a short delay to repair his transmission Damon was ready to go. As both drivers did their burnouts and pre-staged you could feel the tension in the air as these two were about to square off again. When the lights dropped it was Warren out in front, about 100ft down track Warren had a slight wiggle and got out of the groove but continued to stay in it. By that time Damon already got around him and posted yet another pass below the previous ECPRA record. Damonís final times were 6.138/107mph and Warren ran a 6.235/109mph. Damon is starting off the 2006 season with high hopes of capturing the ECPRA Pro Stock title this year. Not only did he qualify 1st, win the race, but he also broke the ET Record which will earn him bonus points and he could have also broken the MPH record as well, currently this one is being looked into for verification.
In the Super Pro class it was the local boy Phillip Drew out of Hamilton, OH taking the win over David Wegner making the long 9 hour drive from Davidson, NC. Phillip ran a 7.617/90.37mph on a 7.49 dial in against Davidís 7.096/95.55mph on a 7.05 dial in. Also in the Super Pro class it was Aaron Creech posting the Low ET award with a 6.189/113mph. In the Pro Class it was Troy McNair from Mansfield, OH taking the with over John Pence from Worthville, KY. Troy ran a 9.304/59.90mph on a 9.20 dial in over Johnís 9.875/60.65mph on an 8.97 dial in. John had been running strong all day until he had fuel problems in the final round which slowed him down by nearly a second on his run. In the Street class it was yet another Ohio native cruising into winners circle. Geoff Bailey from Kettering, OH ran a 11.431/57.98mph on a 11.35 dial in against Rich Johnson from New Powell, IN. Rich ran a 11.514/57.52mph on a 11.48 dial in. Unfortunately Rich lost this race in the starting line with a .749 reaction time to Geoffís .668.
With the event coming to a close around 6:30pm after the final Pro Stock run many people could have been disappointed to not have a larger Pro Mod field, or didnít like that it rained for 15 minutes and caused over an hour delay between the rain and oil downs, but that simply was not there this time. With awesome side by side racing in the Pro Stock Class and a family oriented atmosphere the entire facility was as if it were a bunch of friends having a great time at a cook out. This event brought back a lot of memories of how it use to be at a Vw event where you could sit and talk with old friends and enjoy the company of many Vw enthusiasts. The team at Larryís Offroad and the support of many friends and families have truly helped evolve the Larryís Offroad Spring Nationals into a must attend event. If you havenít had the opportunity to attend this event at this great facility please make the plans now to attend next year. See you there.
