I have a friend in Vermont who needs a rebuild and her mechanic has suggested GEX. Anybody have experience with their engines or any info about them? Thanks, Pete

Get a new mechanic. Search the archives for GEX. This comes up every now and again.

I totally agree.

As they say "a picture is worth 1000 words".

Tearing down a obviously GEX "rebuilt" engine:

First I found it to have a stock 311 head on the left side, with used springs and worn guides. The right side had a nearly new 040 heads, new springs, awesome guides and a still fresh valve job.

Upon pulling the left head off I found 2 odd sized cylinder head nuts, got them off and saw there was no washer underneath them - just black RTV. Once I got the head off I found the reason for the odd sized nuts:

Amazing... Shocked

R-U-N as fast as you can from that mechanic. The search function will give you more than a few nights reading on nightmares.

I have gone the GEX route...and got exactly 16,010 miles before the wrist pin ruptured the cylinder... the c clip failed after 16,010 miles...hmmmm...16 months after the rebuild. Twisted Evil
I have a Boston Bob engine now...20,000 miles in a year with help from a good man... I doubt I'll need another engine for 10+ years...but if I did I'd get one from Boston Bob! Very Happy

My GEX engine failed me after approximately 5,000 miles. Worst road trip ever. I wish I had had the Samba 7 years ago.
