ok here are some pics of the damage, #4 exhuast came off and put a hole in the piston, nicked the cylinder and bent the intake too. so i need at least a new piston with rings, cylinder, head, pushrod, and rocker adjuster.

After an incident like this, I strongly suggest a full and complete rebuild.

I thought he just did one.... opops!!!

I have pix somewhere in the engine forum of a 36hp case and head from an engine that sucked a valve. It cracked one of the case webs and wrought all sorts of havoc on the internals. The case was junk, but the crank was savable after some machine work.

yeah i wasnt hammering down the freeway, just crusing so it didnt destroy alot. i think it hit a few more times than 5

this is what i count:

#5 & 6 are from the stem side of the valve

What about the main bearings, are they still in good condition?

yeah i see no scratches or grooves in any bearing surface and it was very clean inside, i do think the cam bearing were a bit worn, i may replace just those, would that be a bad idea to replace just those?

heres some pics if you guys find anything else:

And besides, it would be very hard to connect the sloping side of the Karmann Ghia to the side of the Squareback. But, then again, it is a fine idea! Idea

yeah i have been driving the car everyday now to school and i really needs some tuning but its being a bitch, none the less it is running very strong, i can really let the rear end out and powerslide corners in second, very fun Very Happy that oil temp gauge works well, it doesnt leak and seems accurate enough, i need to find a 3/32 Mono headphone extenstion so i can run the gauge up to my dash board.

well if this car is to go under the knife, it will be in about 4 weeks, i have been having doubts on doing the operation, it is just ALOT of work to do a good job of it, and if i know it would turn out rubbish, then i wont do it.

i have a roof that may work but what about sides, and a rear door, this would all be made from scratch, making it all and fitting properly and looking good is just a ton of work, i would have help but none of us are really experienced.
ive been talking with my instuctor closely on the subject and while im in probably the most well equipped shop ill ever work in with the english wheels, planishing hammers, pullmax, strinker stretchers, power hammer, every type of roller, every hand tool i could need, a full paint shop, and wood shop, it just comes down the time i wont have to do the work, im talking like 120+/- Hrs, even with 3 people that isnt much time.

well you guys will be the first to know, well im off to Reno for Hot August Nights, a huge car show that has a great swap meet too, maybe i can snag some bits to help the build.

ok so not much work besides planning lately, ive planned on using pre-63 type 2 rear hatch that will be bent to fit the shape of the rear and joined to the lower half of the ghia lid, the rear window may be changed to a single/double cab rear glass. the inner structure will be a replication of the factory hat channel
and the sides will be fabriated from scratch. so i hope to find all i need at the next Bugorama next weekend. maybe a motor too, i will use the rear firewall as part of the floor. but im still open to idea on it. i will get some more pics of the new roof soon

Awesome! I hope you are planning to upgrade the shocks and rear torsions for the additional weight.
