I tought I would start a thread discussing the the correctness of 1954 and 1955 engines please be specific as possible thanks
Nice summary of a lot of parts from another member:

Correct BR3T distributor for a February car
3-hole Engine tin - breastplate, cylinder tin & heater boxes. Note the cylinder tin also has side caps that are welded on - they were stamped in on later versions (not sure when exactly)
54 heater boxes are similar to split window (also 3 hole), but are missing the flap for the X plate. You can see the difference here - split on the left, 54 on the right
Correct coil should be a Bosch TE6A3 - note the small date stamp just above the coil # - 4L (April '55)
Correct Bosch generator & regulator, note date code on each 3K (March 54)
Correct weld nuts on fan shroud (inside at bottom of both ends), throttle ring (pictured), backside of wire tube clamps, and bottom side of cylinder tin

Well it has the single strap air cleaner and the round top regulator. I believe that both of these were used in '54 and '55. Have you talked to Todd about shipping it? |

Lower crank pulley & fuel pump are 1956-later style. The crank pulley should have no rolled lip on the outside edge. The fuel pump should have a domed top, not a removeable Brass fitting as shown. _________________ 1947 Typ 11a

Generator & fan shroud look correct. The fan housing (1953-55) should NOT have a square dimple behind the aircleaner, and I don't see one on that particular motor.
The generator should be a thin slot generator. In the pics, the generator has the louvered cover so it's not visible. _________________ 1947 Typ 11a

Carburetor stand should have a rounded edge and not two flat sides. _________________ "What a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away." Dobee, Dobee, Do |

The "stand" I'm referring to is the little piece of metal that supports the carb from the front. Not the whole manifold. _________________ "What a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away." Dobee, Dobee, Do |

i was just wondering is this engine even a 1954 engine or is it a early 55 engine
from the samba vins oval info thread
i got these numbers for decenber of 1954 meaning the last few 1954 engines ended with 945 526 and only 6 total numbers
now the engine in the ad with serial number 1-0921258 wouldn't it be a may of 1955 engine and not a ""1954"" engine
this is just info i collected from the samba http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/bugchassisdating.php
correct me if Im wrong I just don't want to spend the money if its not right for mt 54 vert thanks guys _________________ **WANTED** ONE 4 1/2 EARLY FUCH |

Just a little question, The add says that the engine for sale LOOKS like this one. The photos are not of the one for sale. Get some of the one for sale before you buy it, It may be even more incorrect. Just my 2 cents OLDOVAL _________________ 1957 Oval Rag |

The pics that are on Todd's ad is of the '54 engine. The engine that is for sale now is a '55. He's using the '54 pics to sell the '55 engine. |
