the seals are not left / right specific... installation instructions were lost on the iSP site when our forums were lost / server changed.... I have installed them myself and it did not seem that hard...

all original style window rubber follows the following rules

rubber onto glass, trim onto rubber, glass assembly into car...

the only thing different for fastback pop outs is the metal support frame goes into the rubber first, then the glass

the fastback rubber seal has a flap towards the inside, with the support frame & glass fitted to the rubber you will notice the frame studs poking at the seal, you will need to slice a hole or i call it a tit off the tip where the posts to mount the assembly to the body are wanting to poke thru the seal

once that step is completed, you can proceed to install the trim onto the window rubber

from there, install it to the car, last things to do are release any tension on the seal when it wants to roll under from pulling it in with the rope, install the molding trim fixed clip that joints the trim, then lastly install the 4 tension clips onto the rubber seal at the forward hinge points were the glass starts to bend open / where the inner frame starts

lastly hookup the popout latch, clean the window and enjoy

I hope this info helps....

Yes, the seals are L and R. I'm certain I'm using the right one as the profile wouldn't fit with the other.

The glass does need to go into the seal more. The corners are not molded, it's just a loop. It doesn't stay in place without holding it, it just pops out. I think if we could manage to somehow 'glue' that end in the seal it would work. Once is fit in the car the seal would get pushed into place.

I'm about ready to throw in the towel on these and just use stationary seals for now. Then I make an install appointment with ISP when I go down for the Classic.

Before you throw in the towel. Call me or I can call you. I'll PM you.
ISP, OEM, Used. They are all like this. They are too cool and hearing all new sounds from the rear is worth it.

After reading the replies this afternoon I was encouraged to give it another go seeing as they have actually been installed successfully by DIY'ers.

Well, I got one side in! Trim, clips, nuts, and all. Fits really nice.

What I did different was pushed the glass as much and as hard as I could into the forward section of the seal. This left about a 3/4" gap at the back. From there, I stuffed a block between the end of the glass and seal/frame to hold it in tension and in place. While keeping pressure on the glass from popping out of the front, I worked in the trim. Then it's more or less a normal install, but you just need to be careful to get the studs from the frame in place.

I have the passenger side to do tomorrow. I'll take some pics of how I did it.

I have them both in now! I took a whole bunch of pictures. Hopefully this will help someone out in the future. If the first one takes four hours, the second will only take you two. Laughing

Here goes:

The seal is just a loop. There are two sections glued in that are about 2" long. These are for the U-shaped channel in the frame.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The shorter piece in between the two 2" pieces is for the forward part of the window.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Here's a shot of the U-channel that the frame goes into. Use some silicone spray and push it all the way in.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Now there are two flaps that need to go around the L shaped portion of the frame. One of the flaps has a rounded bump on the end of it. That one goes to where the center of the 'L' is and the other rounded one goes over top of that. The first picture here is a little fuzzy, but you can make out the round bump that goes on the inside.

Before you get it all worked around the corner, push in the other side of the U-shaped part.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

And now the frame is completely in.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

So now there are 4 bumps where the studs on the frame are. You need to cut a small slit on the inner side of the seal only to expose the stud. Don't cut through the outer flap.

Now to put the outside clips on. The rounded part faces toward the rear of the frame.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Get them started like this and use some silicone spray. These are hard to get on as the fit is very tight. But both of the rolled under clips need to grab the seal and slide over the 2" section.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

And they're on.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Next start pushing the glass into the forward part of the seal. I didn't have to use very much of the spray here.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Once you get it situated, push hard in the forward direction from the rear of the glass to seat the two forward corners. There should be a pretty good gap at the rear when you get the front all tight in the channel.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Next, fit the trim into the groove on the outside of the seal. I did it a few inches at a time just using my thumb to pull back on the seal and let it fall into the trim. Be careful not to move the glass around too much and periodically push the glass into the forward part of the seal as before. This will take awhile, but when you're done it will be like this.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Now install the cord (or wire) that is used to pull the lip in place. I started here so that as I pulled the two forward corners would be the first to set in place. Again, careful not to move the glass around!

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Poke some holes in the headliner material for the studs.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Get the window in place.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Press on the window while pulling the cord and get the lip around the window edge.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Now it's in place, but the studs are not really through the holes in the car.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

It will take some pushing/pulling, but get the studs into the slots, adjust if needed, and put the nuts on. Might as well take out the seat and battery, because you will drop those nuts several times. Evil or Very Mad

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Now the inner clips go on. They grab the bottom of the seal and kind of snap into place against the top of the seal and glass.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Now just go around the seal and push it all into place to smooth it out and clean it up! Good luck, it's a pain, but CAN be done.

Awesome, thanks for the pics and tips!

When I get my nut plates welded in, and a new headliner installed, I'll tackle my popouts. (I have a '71 so the holes are there but not the nutplates at the rear edges).

I just finished installing my popouts and I wanted to thank Brent for his excellent step by step with pictures! He is right that is took about 4X as long to do the 1st window compared to the 2nd. I think that rule applies to almost ever step in a restoration.

I have a couple of recommendations to add.

1) I put the outside clips on after the glass. And I found that sliding them on is really tough. I put the edge closest to glass on first (just hooked it in) and then using a plastic trim tool I pushed the rubber on the bottom into the other hooked edge.

2) On the first window I used Silicone to put the glass in and I found that the glass moves around a lot and it is really difficult to get the front edge in and make it stay. And then I couldn't get the trim on. On the second one I did not use any Silicone and the rubber grabbed the glass and stayed in place. It was much easier. Do not use Silicone on the glass.

Just finished that, wow that might have been the most difficult part of the resto that i have come across. I agree don't use silicone spray. I feel most of my issues were related to the new trim not being bent to the proper curves, the trim really is what holds the seal to its final shape. i would have been better off using my OG trim. They are in so i am moving on.

Nice writeup Brent! I know, old thread, but the best one I've found.

I need to order the frames but I'm also not sure I have the right seals. Did you have to open up your seals in order to put the frames in? Or did they come that way?

AFAIK, Brent is now living a survivalist existence in a remote wilderness area far from civilization.
He left a fine legacy here on the Samba no doubt. Smile
But i can answer your question..

Seals come with the little slide/pocket areas already molded in.
If you can't find the spot to slide your frames into, maybe you have the seals for fixed rear glass?

That's what I'm thinking.

Well, I have to order frames anyways. I'll just add seals to the order.

Thanks.

There's a huge difference between the two. It should be fairly obvious if you have pop-out seals or regular window seals.

Is there anywhere I can source the black trim clips for the Fastback popouts? I have frames, latches, and seals but no clips, no trim. I bought the car many years ago with Cal Look seals installed, and I'm hoping to bring the popouts back into service.
