Here is a working list of lens type and year. Please feel free to update as you see fit.

To summarize:

1949 - 1950? = Large sliver, no logos.
1950? - 1952? = Large sliver, Hella logo only.
1952? - 1953 = Large sliver, Hella and squiggly.
1953 - 1954 = Small sliver, Hella and squiggly.

I believe the lenses are the same from beginning of production until the end of 52 - large silver no logos. My 52 (may) had lenses without any logos on prior to me owning it. For sale picture:

I guess what we need to confirm is when the hella logo appeared (very beginning of 53?) and when the squiggle appeared

From some old stock at a dealership I have a load of bus headlamps. At least three of these are for a Barndoor and they are all the same style..

Part number: 211 941 021 A

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Narrow sliver, VW logo opposite sliver, no "NL"-mark...

From what VIN/date to what VIN/date were these used??

There are also 3 other styles of non-Barndoor lenses....check my pics in the "Parts - Bus"-gallery. I would appreciate to hear the use-dates for the three other styles as well.
Part numbers for the 3 newer styles:
211 941 021 D
211 941 039 A
211 941 040

Thank you in forehand!

Oysteyn,

IMO this is not a barndoor headlight t Check the date stamps on the bucket and reflector, I think late 55 or 56

Guido

PostPosted: Fri Jul 02, 2010 8:15 am    Post subject: Early bus headlight reflectors Reply with quote

This week I purchased a large load of misc nos parts, In this load there was a nice pile of early bus headlight pieces & parts. Most items mainly the reflectors are Hella. None of my books (later) show the reflector part numbers I have. I know they are from the 50’s possible early 60’s
Some are wrapped in VW cardboard 211 941 152, More in the vw blue box 211 941 151 A , Large stack no box 211 941 152A They all take the early bulb holders same as split? There are a few odd one with no part numbers. I was wondering if any of these are barndoor. I looked thru all the headlight threads but there is nothing on just reflectors.

"oben" stamped on the top
On the bottom , stamped

AGREE AB/TP 512
I-63636

IMPORTE D'ALLEMAGNE

Both were with stamped hella ring , single rivet and drain hole

Could it be original lense ???? or aftermarket ???? or......????

French market lenses--possibly correct for the '54. This was covered in another thread on the Oval Window forum recently, which stated they were '52-only.

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=441558

What are the date codes printed on the bucket(s)? They shouldn't be later than mid-'54.

I'm guessing 1954 or 1955. However, the seller isn't showing any clear pictures of the bucket or markings, so I'm betting it's off the non-BD '55 he is parting out.

I found this bucket. It looks like US Spec Barndoor bucket, but the lens is fluted. There is VW stamped in the glass at the top, and on the bottom is a Bosch symbol, as well as a Bosch written in script. I didnt see these lenses posted, any ideas on origin?

trim ring is single rivet, hella stamped with screws at 5 and 7 o'clock.

The lens is circa 1955-60 Bosch Type 1, not original to the Hella design bucket.

Does the rim have a drain hole on the side?

Is there a date code (not visible in the pictures) stamped in white paint near the springs? It should have a letter, followed by 2 to 4 numbers.

Are the plated pivot arms marked "Links" (left) or "Rechts" (right)?

If this is truly a barndoor sealed-beam bucket, it has to be one of the earliest produced (1953 or early 1954). I have only seen one other barndoor sealed-beam assembly (late '54-'55) and it was on a '67 bus.

It's not a bus headlight, the fluting in the glass is 90 degrees out. That's from a beetle

Yes it has a drain hole making it a drivers side (LHD) bucket

there is no date code paint marks anywhere around the black painted bucket

No, the outer pivot arm is not marked but "links" is printed on the inner headlight housing (see pic). the pivot arms do look like they are right and left specific do to tab shape.

The date stamp is barely visible next to the fingertip in the picture.

If it contains an "L" = 1953, "M" = 1954

In any case, this is a genuine early barndoor sealed-beam bucket!

L1218 = Dec '53. The date codes on these pre-Dec '54 buckets with no Hella logo either have the "18" or they don't.
