Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong here? The elbows do not line up w/ the outlets of the fresh air box. This is about to drive me up a wall! I know the vent elbows are correct (part #'s match the original ones).
Thanks for any info,
Scott |

There's a short lenght of hose that connectgs the two plastic parts. You're missing those hoses. _________________ Glenn

You are missing the transition pieces from the box to the elbow. I believe they are accordian (bendable) type tubes. |

I've tried to put hose on it, but the angle is so large (because the outlet of the box is not even close to inline w/ the elbow) I can't bend the hose enough to connect both ends without crushing it.
Maybe I'm not using the right type of hose? Is it a "special" piece for this application?

It looks like the elbow is not all the way up in place. It can be a real pain in the ass to get it in postition because of the defroster flap. If you look at the top of the elbow near the windshield you'll be able to see if they're all the way in. _________________ Designed for four soldiers and a machine gun...also for family use.

Hiya Scott,
Well, I could be wrong, but..................
It looks to me as if the air box you have installed is not correct for a 74. It looks exactly like the air box on my 70. The design of the air box changed with the 71 model year so that a two speed fan could also be housed inside. I'm guessing that you need that somewhat larger airbox.

I agree, Mike. That is exactly the fresh air box on my '70. Probably wrong for a '74. You are also missing the connecting hoses, like Glenn said. |

I think it is correct because I have 3 '74s and all the fresh air boxes look the same as the one pictured. I hope I'm right cause if i'm wrong i'm screwed |

Scott, the connecting hose goes "inside" the opening on the elbow.

Huh, so no change in fresh air box from 70 to 74? Well, the elbows certainly look different anyway. Here is a pic of how mine are connected. Hope it helps.

Scott, like I said, the connecting hose goes "inside" the opening of the elbow. It actually screws in.

That fresh air box looks exactly the same as the one in my 74.
You might have a 75-77 air box that has the 2 speed blower fan inside. _________________ Glenn

Maybe that is a "deluxe" fresh air box, and "standard" vents? _________________ die schwarzen Schafe #666 |

Hope I dont confuse this, but your vents look like my 72 Super's vents, and on my 72 Super the connection on the fresh air box is the same size as the vents... Something looks odd about the difference between your air box and the vents. _________________ 1972 Super Beetle |

The fresh air box and the elbows all look good from here for the 74.
Looks like you need to drive your self up the wall more and get some better hints on how to get the elbows seated all the way on the dash vents. I know it is hard to do, I too have been all the way up the wall before.
The elbows for the elec fresh air box have holes in the end where the connecting hose goes to draw more air. The elec air box goes on the 72 and on supers (and late standards 76/77) with the switch on the center dash for it. Not on <74/75 stds. _________________ cars come and go, VW's live and breathe! |

I'll take the elbows back out and try to get them further up into the dash vents. As for the hoses that connect the box outlets to the elbows... The regular (2") heater hose that I use for the fan shroud/heater box connection is way too big for the fresh air box outlet (1 3/16" approx.), but if I buy hose small enough for that, it will be too small to fit even inside the vent elbow (2 1/4" approx.)
Thanks again for all the help folks!

If you just try to push the elbows back on the vents, you won't succeed. You first have to remove the vents that are on the top of the dash. Then press the elbows onto the vents above the speedo/glove box lid. Once the elbows are there, you can install the vents from the top of the dash. If you don't do it this way, you will never get them on far enough. That is maybe why your elbows don't line up with the air box. |

Well, I got 'em installed, although they still look wrong (but what the hell, they work!). Thanks for all the tips folks.
