|
|
any ideas on what the square 'box' is up by the R tire on my '86 Westy with A trans.?
has a rubber cover on it; is marked VDO; with a cable(??) going into one end and elec. wires at the other end.
makes me think it might be some weird conversion box from manual speedo drive to electronic???
but why in the world would this not be built into the trans. or wherever?
you'd think they would mount the speedo pickup near a wheel, axle, or the trans. |

That VDO box houses the mileage counter for your EGR Oxy Sensor. There's a button on it to reset that red light that comes on periodically.
See your Bentley, page 90.10
Don't try to use logic.

On my '84 the O2 sensor is screwed into the exhaust manifold on the driver's side.

I didn't know that they made vanagons before 1986- just kidding . The older models have things situated a little different, but the O2 is in the exhaust before the cat output. |

And if you don't know when your O2 sensor was last replaced, forget the stupid box and replace it with the right Bosch one for your van, now.
'Gremlins' had NOTHING on the horror a bad oxygen sensor can inflict on an engine that by every other measurement ought to be running well.
