Well the floor pans in my 70 bug have the same tracks as earlier bugs, why wouldn't they just slip in?

Check this thread out. I looked at your bug. Looks cool. Are those running boards fiberglass or metal?

They were the original running boards. Stripped off the rubber, sanded them down and had them painted with the car. It looks better that way but are temporary until I get new ones.

JimA, thanks for the link. But my seats are so trashed, that wouldn't even work for my taste.

i have a 68 beetle and low back seats slide right in with no modifications.

you won't believe it but i bought a pair of low back seats from a show with good covers and good stuffing for $20 bucks. i answered "i'll take them" so fast my wife started giggling.

good luck

Not to change the subject or anything, but how the seats look shouldn't be a factor. If they have a good frame, you can go to a plethora of websites to get reupholstery kits to make them look pristine, for VERY cheap.

I have a 69, with lowbacks out of a 65 in it - they have rips and tears, but I know that eventually when I get around to doing the interior, they'll be very inexpensive to redo.

Keep your eyes peeled - even if you find just the seat with no upholstery, most kits include the burlap, foam, and vinyl/leatherette/naugahyde outer cover to complete the job.

Happy motoring!

Found a pair on Ebay for $25, $75 with S/H. They are destroyed but the frames have alot of potential. I agree, it'll be cheap to redo them. Should I go with the pre-molded foam inserts?

it really depends on your level of skill with upholstery. Non OEM parts will have fitament issues 90% of the time. foam is GREAT if its quality.

Can't be much to it, if I buy the installation tool. If I take my time, I know it'll come out great. It's going to take alot of prep time though. The seats I'm looking at are shot.

http://www.procarbyscat.com

they have custom lowbacks to fit your bug..they do the rails and everything you need...not original, but i have seen them in bugs and they look better than stock lowbacks in my opinion..

Hell if I did the upholstery in my 79 anyone can do it. Get the video though- lots of good tips for newbies.

The injected foam is tons easier to install but is really hard on the butt. Its very stiff.

The foam rubber replacement for the horsehair and old fashioned sisel and springs is much more comfortable. Not that hard either, just more steps. Also the injected foam raised the seat level in my bug by about an inch and a half. My legs practically hit the steering wheel.

Think twice about injected foam cushions.

Post photos when you're done. Good luck

Sorry I'm getting back to you guys so late. I bought the low backs off ebay, stripped them down to the frame. I had to weld the bar at the bottom of the backrest, and rig a couple springs, and paint them. All in all, a good buy. I'll be redoing the seats this summer. I'll post pics when its complete.

I didn't see this post until now. VW's 68-72 highback seats are simply lowbacks with a headrest hoop welded to them. If you wanted to you could remove the backrest cover, remove the foam pad for the headrest and simply cut off the hoop and re-upholster with 67 backrest covers.
