Amazing.

And what a great reference for anyone wanting to restore theirs back to original.

I assure you I'll be using those as a reference to finish mine when the time comes.

Wonderful looking Kombi!

But as this is the Bastard Engine Thread, I have to mention the non-Bastard fuel pump. Now, I'm normally not much of a fan of that design, VW very rightly did a "recall" of sorts on it, due to its inherent design flaw (the straight up pipe puts the fuel hose in harm's way of the throttle lever) BUT, if you're gonna be a Total Retro Bad-Ass Bus Bastard, you gotta have da right pump! Oh, and a period correct-looking ignition coil too. Twisted Evil

Thanks for the compliments gent's...First off, yes if anyone needs any specific detailed pics, let me know, I will try and accomidate provided I don't have to take anything apart LOL...And you caught me on the coil, All my Folk's could find in the "D" to get it running, I'll replace it...Been so long I can't remember If I replaced the fuel pump or if that's what came on it, Have a lead on a couple Bastard pumps. I also just learned that the ignition switch was replaced by the original owner with a "T" code (64-66), probably between 64-66. I also put new tires on it LOL, so we'll say 96% O.G.

Eureka Andy!...The original owner's told me the bus had suffered an engine fire at some point on a road trip through Wisconsin. Which is why I was amazed it still had the bastard 40, as they had told me it was taken in for repairs. Must not have been repaired at a dealership? But Dollars to Doughnuts the engine fire was caused by the fuel line being worn by the throttle linkage...

Wasn't that "four" horsepower mainly in the lower compression ratio?

As for the reason behind the engine failure - it could be as you say, but you'll never know unless you find documentation for it. The service bulletins that I've seen date from the early 40HP era, as this example from the Beetle Workshop Manual:

So what is the actual displacement of the bastard motor?

Bore?

Stroke?

Just out of curiosity...

Is it essentially a 40 case with 36 everything else?

36 & 40hp used the same bore and stroke, 77x64 1192cc.

It shares virtually nothing with the 36hp.

Lower compression ratio, (6.6), and, if I recall, was rated at a slightly lower rpm than the 40hp.

There are already window sticker photos on this site and I have seen repros available on eBay sometimes.

Here's one from a '64
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_page.php?pic_id=200742

You could obscure part of it if you are concerned.

Breathtaking "Bastard" Bus! Beautiful window sticker! Lucky, lucky you!

You also need to wash the shit out of that spare tire/wheel and detail it! Very cool! I also see a complete detailing of that entire engine compartment in your immediate future! Get rid of that black stuff...

Congratulations!

Bill
