I still question it . . . it DID appear on the web after all.
No biggie, I just can't accept the tonal shifts and lack of genuine blacks in the image. In all of the other photographs in that gallery, the objects are darker in the foreground and lose value and contrast as they recede. Even focus is diminished. Those old American monsters against the far wall are in crisper focus than the wreck, although the small dark area centered beneath the wreck, obviously present in the original photo sans wreck DOES match well. That there would be SUCH a difference in shadow over just a two foot area is SO wrong. The wreck is much more ghostly than the background cars and appears to be FLOATING on gray tires rather than casting a darkened shadow beneath black tires. It was placed in the photograph and doesn't match the original atmosphere of the photo at all.
It's a total fake. Maybe even an older fake done through the double exposure process and fine tuned in the developer, but still a fake . . . no matter what it's source.
Just my opinion. No big deal, I just can't accept it. Too many discrepancies to mention for what's supposed to be a simple stupid garage shot.

Sounds like you know what you are talking about, TC!
I did a quick search on Google Pictures and found this site with what looks like a slightly better version of the same pic.
http://pro.corbis.com/search/Enlargement.aspx?CID=...A2B4E51%7D
It still looks kinda real to me. Maybe a bit too much flash light but hey, I don't know anything about tweaking pictures. Wonder why someone would want to mess with this picture though?
Anyhow fake or not just wanted to share it with you guys.

You absolutely right, I shouldn't have even opened my "mouth," what difference does any of it make.
The CAR is real and it's just as frightening as can be ! ! !
What a fascinating photo document of something that we've heard about all of out lives. That's the actual car and it's amazing ! ! !
And thanks for sharing it AND the link to the other pictures in the archive.

Probably most know but for those that don't, the guy that is casualy standing there with his arms folded is the driver of the Ford that killed Dean. I would have more dramatic body language if I had run over a dog, let alone kill someone!! |
The misidentification has already been pointed out, but I'm curious about what body language you would expect someone to have in an unposed photograph taken some time after the accident. |

After spending alot of time interested in this whole mystery I realized that (with all due respect to the deceased) If James Dean had been driving an Alfa I probably would not even know his name. While I will admit it was tragic, young man, prime of his career straps into one of the least safe vehicles of all time and gets killed. This stuff happend alot back then...if I had a dollar for every time I almost crushed myself into a VW-foil ball, I could buy everyone lunch. But in all reality I'm a Porsche enthusiast, so what makes this wreck any more tragic or important than any others? What ever happend to Pierre Levegh's #20 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR that killed him and 80 spectators at LeMans for instance?
While it is sort of interesting the whole topic gets to be a sad, slippery morbid slope. I guess I just no longer see the value in coveting an object like this as "history" |

Considering that it was a MB factory car it was likely destroyed. There isn't much left of a magnesium-bodied car after it burns:

Is the guy trying to claim it's JD's car?
The rear body of that one is not bent at all. JD's was. The lack of a fuel filler hole can be explained by the fact that it's a hood from a different car. _________________

Nice wall art but its not bent enough, the numbers are painted way too small, the red flashes on top of the rear wings arn't recreated and does it even have "little bastard" logo? |
