Ignore him, Debbie! That's a pretty great deal in my books - $17,500 asking price for a 1989 Westy with 67,000 miles on it trumps most anything else out there. And its able to be legally registered in California, too.
If I was in the market, I'd be calling those guys up right away! _________________ '84 Vanagon GL 1.9 WBX

Too much body rot for me, but somebody with time and a shop. Bad Head gasket so needs a new engine too or a rebuild.
It's a Westy too...

Yep! At least it's not down on the peninsula surrounded by salt air on 3 sides!
If you got time and money it's a 91 so it has all the VW fixes to the Syncro (if it is original tranny.) Body work is always do-able, but I'd rather not! |

Jake - Given a $2500 difference, if body condition is the same (no rust), I'd rather have a Westy with 175K +++ miles on it that's been recently and completely overhauled than a low mileage Westy that most likely needs an overhaul of every system. BTDT. YMMV.
The van Debbie posted is fine. No offense to her, just pointing out the differences of two similarly priced vans as I think it could help someone new to Westys (looking to buy) save thousands of dollars. Take the 67K mi van put a professionally installed Bostig kit and a AA trans with Peloquin LSD in it (without all the other goods)... how much money have you spent now? And you haven't even touched the brakes, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc. _________________ 1990 Multivan - "Ohana"

I have the inside track on a bus deal (not posted/for sale...yet, will be if I pass on the deal)...My question to y'all is this:
Is $25,000 a proper asking price for the following:
87 Vanagon GL Syncro (tin top)
Full body/paint restore (had bad sun fade, very minimal rust, did not replace window seals/gaskets) West coast rig it's whole life. Sat for last 9 years in a field...
Original 2.1, not rebuilt, has great compression (150k on body/motor) Spent just over $8k on tune up, and all new "supporting cast" parts associated with the engine including all new fuel components and a rebuild of the fuel tank...long list of things done
New tranny, clutch, clutch slave
All new suspension, control arm bushings, ball joints, rebuilt power steering rack, brakes, tires, struts, wheel bearings, all wheel studs, etc...$3200 worth,
Interior has original head liner (small holes patched with original fabric), original front interior, all interior behind the two captains chairs has been rebuilt to a weekender package (original equipment used where possible).
Stainless exhaust and new cat
Factory AC, it works!
Rear locker, it works!
Go Westy bumpers w/spare tire mount on rear
Large roof rack and ladder
Have receipts for all work done...
Never owned a bus, always wanted too...Any questions that I should ask or suggestions are all welcome! If I am stupid to even ask...let me know, I can handle it.
Thanks! |

Totally agree. I'd never spend that much on any tin-top with an original WBX @ 150K miles (regardless of Syncro) no matter the "recent tune-up" bills.
FWIW... there was a Syncro Westy near me recently with original WBX (112K miles) that sold for $10K. Yeah, it needed some mechanical work, a good scrubbing inside and out, but it had no rust and was 100% complete. It most certainly did NOT need an additional $15K worth of work NOR was it "sitting in a field for the last 9 years".
Be patient and shop around. Here's a great resource if you don't know about it already: http://westfaliasforsale.com _________________ 1990 Multivan - "Ohana"

Appreciate the comments...
I thought it seemed high, but you both make some good points. My eyes are getting blurry from research so it's good to refocus with some perspective.
Thanks! |

yes, but maybe a good way to scam a couple grand quickly off of some body. That is fairly unique van with either the cladding added to a Westfalia or a pop top and Westy interior added to a carat. _________________ Joe

It was a very nice looking blue 90 Westfalia camper with a price of $2,645 in Toronto. Was that $2,645 Canadian or US?
Daizee, you could have zipped over an bought it......had it been a real ad. _________________ Joe

Some people. I got asked today if my van was so expensive because it was a VW! I said if she found it expensive then it was for her. She had no idea about the engine or the era. Waste of time.
Yes I would have gone and looked at it if it had been real. _________________ '09 2.5L Jetta 5 cylinder, 5 spd, super turbo, see thread in H2O Cooled Jetta, etc...
