So that is less rust than normal?
Geesh...
Maybe I'm not in touch but I would think maybe around 10.
My own van has zero rust with a 1.8t and I don't even think I could get 15, but what do I know. _________________ One of these days I'm gonna settle down,

Owner began rust clean up and some suspension/wheel improvements.
Unsure of the 2.1L swap and interior from the ad, obviously. Local seller so might check it out in case the rust situation is not terrible.
At this price, there is some headroom to continue the restore. What do you think?[/url] |

Goodness, did they just rattle can the wheels and tires black? The seller doesn't appear to be telling too many stories but greasy tires on a project is funny.

Welcome! Good first find. Sounds legit but you never know. Ask for "before" pix. I think autocorrect might have changed "GoWesty" to "forestry."
"I have a 1984 vanagon westfalia for sale. I bought it to restore it and do a modern campervan but have lost motivation. It’s got a 2.1l swap. Runs alright. Definitely will need to be gone through. Brand new forestry 1.5” lift springs with Mercedes wheels and brand new general grabber tires. Interior is currently out of the van (removed it to gain access to fix rust). I fixed the rust commonly found behind the sink/stove, rear rockers, side rocker, and below windshield. New windshield after repairing rust in lower a pillar corners. It’s currently stripped but I have the full camper interior along with several thousand dollars worth of parts to go with it including new seats, flooring, seals, and just a bunch. Of random stuff to freshen it up. I was going to raptor liner it but want to offer it up for sale before spraying it. Have receipts to prove. It runs and drives but needs lots of work. Solid van though. Asking 5,000$." _________________ '87 Westy in Wolfram Grey Metallic |

Thanks!
I swung by to look up close and its a bit more than I think I'd like to take on. Some holes in the floor, wiring / housings look like they need to be run through, front seats were pretty rough so assuming rest of the interior (not in the van at the time) might need some work as well. Owner was not there to get inside and start up, but going to keep looking. May be a good project for someone with more time and resto ability. Thanks for the reply! |

Was on my way back down from Northern Wisconsin yesterday, so I stopped to look at this '87 full Westy.
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=2388809
The rust was too much for me at the asking price, but for someone who just wants to camp, it might be a good enough 'starter' Westy to then find a clean Tintop and convert later.
I'd take it at $5K US, maybe.

Midwest van, their version of no rust will vary greatly from a CA buyer's version of no rust.
There is something very goofy going on about the CVs being removed to run in 2wd. Buying a syncro without drivetrain installed is a great recipe to spend a bunch of money to fix PO issues. Unsticking a diff lock can be a real PITA.
Buying a syncro from someone that doesn't know what they are doing should be done very carefully. |
