I lurk around on the Split forum since I am a previous owner and want to find a decent double cab. Anyway they have a thread started that highlights Nice Buses for a good price since so many out there are priced like gold ounce for ounce. Laughing

I thought it might be a good idea to start one up here too. I found this Westy Camper that looks like a real clean well loved Vanagon that is priced nice for a clean Westy. Check it out:

The headlights would indicate an 86+ the bumpers 88+ and the interior color is that of an 85 or older. (Frankenwesty?)
and why that spare tire carrier on the rear hatch? Very Curious...

That is a steal!!
Frankenwesty? Maybe in someones eyes but this guy has just added a few of the more desirable parts of the newer model to his. Those bumpers are nice, the head lights give it the more modern look, although I prefer the round ones. He is running 14" wheels it looks, but maybe oversize tires that don't fit in the carrier.

Yep, you really can't tell if it's a deal or dud until you see it up close and drive it.

Would make me want to look at the front end real close, could have been hit like was mentioned above, used parts from a newer van (the bumper is from a newer one too), and for some reason couldn't put the spare back in the right location.
That mount is a total hack job, I wonder if the struts hold the tail gate up? Rolling Eyes

Good call on the spare tire mount up front probably being damaged. Based on all the sleuthing in previous posts, I would deduce that this van was in a front end collision and they swapped parts from a newer one. Still might be a good deal though. My van had a salvage title due to a hit on the front pax side. It was fixed, had no frame damage and overall my van is in killer shape and runs awesome. I had a 71' bus that was hit in the rear, the insurance company totalled it, I kept the "salvage" rights. Put a new bumper and engine hatch from a junkyard on it and eventually sold it for about 4x what I paid for it.

Im originally from Southern Illinois and anything that old is a rust bucket under there with all the salt for snow season and nasty tar jobs gumming up the underside in the summer repairing the roads.

Its probably too rusted or loaded with tar or too hot in the summer to put the spare tire under there IMO.Its located in Illinois and usually if I never heard of the town its a Chicago suburb and I noticed there arent any underside shots either. Being a camper though theres a chance it sat in the garage or barn during the winter.

The last bug I bought was a 73 bright yellow super beetle and it looked awesome on the lot and being love is blind I didnt notice the giant holes in the wheel wells until I had a foot of water on the floor when I was driving in the rain a week later.

For really-o truly-o. I just talked today to a seller (original owner) that listed his 89 Wolfsburg on eBay. I bid for it after seeing it and driving it but wasn't willing to go over 3k. It needed a lot of work. Some folks from Phila. won it at 3275, sight unseen. Now they have spent about 4k to rebuild and restore and are asking the seller for a rebate. What else can be said except "caveat emptor"?

When ever I do an ebay sale I allways give the buyer the out. If they don't like it then that's OK. I'll would just relist. It has never happened but you have to be fair. The way I see it: the bid gives you first look,no commitment.
But the price IS final.

Geez...as much as I use the rear lid, I'd hate to have a tire attached to it. What a pain that would be. Looks like it used to sit on the rear cushion. Would it be such a big difference in price that they didn't bring the paint to the inside of the door jambs?

Well, now that everyone has shreaded a decent looking Westy for 4gs, I mean the tire is mounted on the rear hatch? So.

I am more concerned about things like rust or transmission problems. Shocked

Anyway, here is one that might be a little pricy yes but we all know how much these mods will cost someone out of pocket. I mean Syncro with an SVX, you know you want it. Cool

The hatch was never made to support the weight of a tire and rim, it's just a steel skin, and the hatch struts won't hold that much weight open, kind of defeats the rear screen for sleeping when its hot.
that's why you see people with spares on some sort of rack or something.
One reason to mount the spare somewhere else is if you are using oversized tires that won't fit in the clamshell, those tires look stock.
So why won't the tire just go back in the clamshell?
One other important thing to stay away from is frame or unibody damage,
With the fact that it has differant frontend parts, a repaint (look at the doors you can see it was a lighter brown)a spare that isn't in the front between the frame rails where it should be
Have the frame rails been damaged in an accident? that's why you want to look close under a car like this.
It really sucks when you have to replace front tires every 10,000 miles, or it tracks down the steet funny, or eats ball joints, ect. ect.
It's hard enough to buy a car in person let alone to try to judge from an ad.
It's really hard to say what a good deal is, free maybe?

You're absolutely right, it could have frame damage. It could be he just likes the "off road look" and couldn't afford a real tire swing out back. I am just saying that the tire mounted on the rear hatch wouldn't deter me, however of course frame damage would. Wink

This is one I would go after myself. I am thinking about it. Slipping trans is no big deal. I have a good spare. BUT, I had this issue once before. Someone put something in the ATF that caused all the soft parts to fall apart. So all we did was clean the automatic and put a soft parts kit in. $350 and it was down the road again.

We wanted a weekender, actually, at first. But got a Westy on an OK deal. This one is cheaper and nicer than what we got. I don't care for the color. But, you don't drive the color.
