Huh, thought the door changed in the '88 model... here's a post we were in on, but I can't remember where I got the initial information. Wracking my brain on it now tho...

What year did Westfalia change the design and does anyone have photos of the design change?

Dave

Actually, it was more of a model change.

All Joker/Club Joker models have the tall door. And all California/Atlantic have the shorter door.

California first appeared in late 88, and the Atlantic in early 89. But there were some overlap Joker production after that (up to 90 I believe)

My 88 does not have the short door but my 90 does.
Such a small detail but once you have had both, the longer door seems horrible.
Well ok its a very minor annoyance.

Yup... horrible. I am just about 100% sure that my PO had some sort of similar thought, and now I get to just have the horror part.

Ya, I think over the '88 model the door changed (North America) So all the '89+ should be the short door... was my original intent on the topic anyway. Just my thought, not a known.

Anyway, here's the "solution" by PO

My PO did the same thing but a cleaner job. The bottom piece still moved so I cobbed up a clamp arrangement to hold it from behind.

I bought a late model closet from GoWesty when they brought over a container of NOS cabinets a few years ago. I think it was like $400. It had the shorter door. I ended up just selling it off on CL after storing it in my garage for a couple years. Reason is that I do not keep the rear table in the van as it makes getting into the top loader cabinets such a PITA, love the smaller front table tho. Plus since we keep bedding in the closet, it makes it a little easier getting a down comforter or sleeping bag in and out with the larger door.

ok, it's been on the local craigslist for a couple days- I think this van has potential, at least on the surface. Seller already lowered price 500 bucks on his listing.

From the Utah classifieds. I've been staring at the ad for 30 minutes now asking WHY.

https://classifieds.ksl.com/listing/53785307

Someone obviously put a lot of money into it including the Subaru 2.5

Someone was way too much into "Finding Nemo/Dory" Rolling Eyes
It's not too bad if you get rid of the lips and eyes, remove the visor, lose the whitewalls, and a few other small changes.
Then it just becomes a Vanagon with a quirky interior and wrap, and you could always remove the wrap.
Obviously has had some serious money spent on it, one can only hope whoever the mechanic was did a good job on mechanicals.

Having owned many VW vans over the years, I still can't believe what prices are out there now. This van actually seems pretty sound for the price though. Lots of money spent.

Doesn't seem like a bad deal. A lot of pictures and priced so you can you address any problems that come up. He only had it 2 days so it could be hiding something more devious im sure you could talk him down. Its converted to Rg13 Very Happy

Not a van but the cheapest poptop I have seen for anyone wanting to convert. Also listed in samba classifieds.

i have watched this one drop in price over the past 4 months. it's a solid van for sure esp. at the price - head gaskets and clutch alone make it worth a look!

Seller states: It is on its third engine. Current engine was installed in 1996 at 37,000 miles."

So it blew 2 motors and had a 3rd one installed in its first 10 years?! WTF?
