not sure if it's a "nice van'
but is a good deal if you are handy and don't mind some sweat equity vs $$$outlay.

Hello Vanagon folks,
Here it is, my Vanagon... It's not pretty, but I used to drive it all around and loved it. The van ran pretty well when I bought it, and I mainly put money into the mechanical side of things. I don't care about form, mostly function.
It has the gas 1.9l water-cooled engine.
The previous owner began de-rusting and prepping for paint. That could be a project for you... Not sure how it got so rusty, but I have removed it from a few spots and it seems to be shallow.
It has always been garaged since I've had it.
The front right wheel assembly needs to be put back together. I felt a slight wobble after hitting a pothole. I started taking things apart before I realized it was just a lump in the old tire causing the wobbling sensation... So now the front right wheel is taken apart and I have the parts to reinstall it. But alas, it cannot be rolled to a shop and I don't have the specialty tools such as a spring compressor... I'm ready to move on, and I hope you're ready to take this and squeeze something great out of it.
I have a folder of all the maintenance that's been done over the years. The engine and transmission were rebuilt recently (mileage-wise). It ran smoothly before the wheel incident, so I assume nothing has changed as it's sat in the garage.
Here are most of the upgrades (I've bought from multiple websites and also in-person at Halsey Portland... Hard to remember):
Rubber intake boot
New gaskets on intake manifold
Rebuilt head
GoWesty AFM (Air Flow Meter) ~$400
New fuel tank, rubber hoses, and fuel level sensor ~$250
Fuel pump
Coarse and fine fuel filters
Speedometer Cable
Accelerator Cable
Refurbished breather tower
Bosch oxygen sensor
Spark plugs
High quality spark plug cables
Refurbished injectors
Parts to reinstall the wheel.
Anyhow, this would make a great parts car, or a nice project for you. I can have it towed to you upon reaching a deal.
The van is near the coast, but I'm posting in Portland for more views.
Will accept cryptocurrency.

Despite what the ad says, I am almost certain that is for a Bus, not a Vanagon. _________________ 1988 Tintop Wolfsburg Special Edition - "Meatloaf"

Good catch! The Vanagon luggage rack doesn't have that stepped front. _________________ '84 Vanagon GL 1.9 WBX

I'm sorry to hear this. I was casually acquainted with the guy who built this business, starting with one '84 Westy.
Another victim of COVID. |
I'm sorry to hear that it was caused by the pandemic. Hopefully the vans bring happiness to their new owners. _________________ Joe T.

A little info (not mine) on the auction house running this sale from the BC Vanagons FB group -
"Their auctions are a joke. They will charge up to 32% on top of the auction price 12% being taxes, and the rest being their cut depending on how you pay. Be warned, things are overpriced and over bid with them"
https://www.facebook.com/groups/BCVanagons/permalink/1442601109420632/ |
Seems like a really strange gripe. Tax is tax. BC has a horrible 7% provincial on top of the federal 5%, so the tax rate is out of the hands of the auction company. Pretty much any business that sells anything has to charge it. That leaves a 20% buyers premium, which I don't think is out of line with what any auction charges. It's hard for someone to be upset at the company over that. |

A Covid 19 travel ban has been implemented between the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island until May 25. Non essential travel is not permitted and that will put a serious crimp in the attendance numbers. |
