Will the 8.5x27x14 BFG All Terrain K/Os on a stock Aluminum wheel fit in the clamshell (spare tire) area with out deflating or mods?
I have been searching around the forums and web and I can't seem to find a definitive answer.
If mods are needed what are your suggestions? Pictures?
Thanks for the input.

The later clamshell is bigger I am told.
Not counting the clamshell, I do not know if early or late is easier to fit a bigger tire under.
If you look at the clam shell, you can easily modify the hangers to allow a bigger tire.
OR use the open aftermarket holder that you can get from the guys in Santa Cruz, whose name escapes me at this second.
I have read around on this forum about this exact topic btw, so:

Geeze PDXWesty, I just don't see how your spare will fit under there?
Judging by the dates in your gallery you were able to replace your Van pretty quickly, glad to see you were okay. This advocates keeping thhe spare up front for additional front impact protection too. Why in the name of God is that driver door glass still intact !?That was a nice Van, very sad. _________________ 1987 Wolfsburg T25 still riding out. A bunch of other VW's passed on...

Yikes what carnage!
You forgot the roof clip for another conversion, though....
So in a new thread, maybe you could tell us all about this! Or did you already? _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

Sorry this is getting so off topic but I will definatly give this, you stripped that biotch for all it was worth. Looks like a turkey carcass after thanksgiving.
I was surprised to find no ads listed, I guess you just have a spare everything now? _________________ 1987 Wolfsburg T25 still riding out. A bunch of other VW's passed on... |

I would like to know how these tyres go on a Vanagon, do they make much road noise, and how do they ride?
I have 14' factory alloys on my dual cab and would like to get a taller tyre fitted to make the gearing a bit better, with out changing to 15 or 16 inch rims.
Thanks |

Honestly I can't tell you how the 14" BFG fits the spare as mine is a 175/70 r14 on the spare, but I will contribute this: The BFG A/T KO's are the best $400 I have spent on this Vanagon, they roll smooth down the highway with no hum and great sidewall stiffness for little to no roll and sway during hard turns. They grip great in sand and dirt, haven't gone muddin?
A buddy of mine has them on his 4-runner with like 30k miles on them and they have gobs of tread wear left, not even close to being run down, get on any 4X4 forum and you will read they are a classic unbeatable tire. Get you sum!

Thanks VWjedi,
I wish they were only $400 here, I have been quoted $200 a tyre thats Aussie $$, still I think I will give them a go.
Nice looking bus.
