Picked this up recently and not sure what my plans are but figured I would introduce it to the type 3 world.
Canadian car with a 63 TO motor, mostly complete, rusty pans and rust around the headlights. No some places the black paint looks new. Sometime in its life someone tried to cover up the faded paint with some sort of putty. Taking it off has proved to be a task so far...
I would guess this is one of the oldest black cars out there..

looks like it's been sitting for a while with those old yellow alberta plates (75-84).
where did it come from? |
Came from Lethbridge so basically Alberta. Was sitting since early 80s and is supposedly a low mileage car which is kind of irrelevant at this point.. _________________ To his their own PBJ

it has been traded around town for a couple of years now, nobody with deep enough pockets, or T3 knowledge to get that one back up and running.
Too many guys think they will buy it 'cause it's cool, then they find out that you can't just buy the parts from CIP so they move on. _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/jim_martin_engine_build.php

The seller told me it had been in the same spot since the early 80's. Said he got it from who he thought was the 2nd owner. Again this is just what he told me. I got it with another one and took a gamble buying it sight unseen. Was hoping for it to be in a little better condition but it's definitely restorable. Most everything there is workable/fixable. Like I have told a few people interested in it that it's a pretty rare bird but as we all know tare doesn't equal valuable. A split window bug in this condition would sell for 3-4x what this would. This is much more rare just being a 62 but the black color makes it even more rare. Those things just don't add up for notches and they are expensive and tough to find parts for as you mentioned above.. _________________ To his their own PBJ

That looks like it.. Curious as to why someone would let that in their garage without cleaning it out first. It's so full of mice nests and nastiness.. Good to know a little history at least. Id like to track down the person who put the putty on it _________________ To his their own PBJ

I plan to suit up tomorrow to remove the crud and clean it up/sanitize it real good. From there I will get a better understanding of what the car needs. _________________ To his their own PBJ

That must a very early car, at least under the 70k vin. I see the uber rare pop outs with seal on the window frame and not the window and the bumpers with no exterior mounting bolts. Any chance you'd share the VIN? _________________ '68 Lotus White T34 automatic sunroof

suited up and removed more rat crap and debris then I have ever seen in a car.. Canada must have some sort of super field mice up that way.. The car isn't so bad after all of the cleaning..
early popouts as Jack mentioned above.. not sure what month they went to but it looks like around june.
large glovebox button
Side mounted window washer fluid.. I think this change was made in late 63?
Also shown in the above posts is the solid white shifter.. I'm sure there are plenty of other one year parts as well.. _________________ To his their own PBJ

Cool, Yes, 61-63 on that style of washer bottle.
The rubber cap on the brake reservoir is an early thing too, my '63 has the normal screw-top cap.
The white shifter went into the 1963 model year but is still "early cars" only too _________________ How to Post Photos

I noticed the cap but wasn't sure if it was stock. My 63 had the same reservoir but the later top.
I also remember my 63 type 34 had the solid white knob. I was told it wasn't correct but good to know it was. _________________ To his their own PBJ

Yes, the knob might have been correct, especially if the car was a '63 built in '62.
The Shift Knob thread mentions this twice on page 4 for early 63s. _________________ How to Post Photos

Vin is in the 28,000's. |
I had the twin to that car. Same year, same color combo and same VIN range (they probably came over to Canada on the same shipment in 62) Sold it to a guy in Calgary about 15 years ago and last I heard he's done nothing with it.

My 64 Notch (August 63 built) has that side mounted washer.
The dual circuit brake res. is from a 67.
