I rebuild a lot of VW carbs and I have to say the best way to restore one is to start with about 4 of the suckers and see which one runs best, I doubt anyone would be willing to rebuild a carb without having the car its going on there, some of the best looking rebuilt carbs with all new parts seem to run like crap, mind you the 26 VFI is a no brainer, unless its rotten it should run fine with a rebuild kit in it, if it is rotten its unlikely to be worth messing with

Anybody know a source for throttle axle bushings? Is the only way to cut them from some brass bar?

Factory rebuild carbs has those bushings.

26 VFI or VFIS is otherwise very simple to rebuild. You need only the top gasket (special), main jet housing gasket (same than newer carbs) and new needle valve (same than newer carbs). Also have to check that floater not leak.

Housing media blasting + treatment. Matt clear lacking or alcohol oxidation. Lever mechanism zinc plating.

I am using a later plastic float from a 28 PCI in my 26 VFI the metal ones are not very trustworthy (and whos gonna check? ) just need to cut down a pivot pin to the right size and it fits right in, no more sticky loose float in there, I would check with Wolfsburg West and BFY for the top gasket, or just make your own from gasket material, everything else is the same as a later carb, I would leave the re-bushing to a machine shop, I think Rimco does this, shouldnt be any different than any other carb (other than being harder to replace)
