My father was a goldsmith for over twenty years and is really into vws. And in the 90s he made about twenty fake 100,000 kilometer badges of different types. He says the one karmaniac has might be one of them. He always told the buyers that it was a reproduction or a completely original piece that never actually existed during that time. He did say it was a mistake to not put his name on the back somewhere so people could easily tell

So, someone my Boss knows brought this in today...

Says he just bought it for very cheap at a garage sale.

According to what I have read on this thread, it looks like the real thing.

I don't have one of these badges in my collection, and the owner wants to sell it. What is a fair price for an original one in this condition. If it is fake, what is a fair price for that? It looks like the silver plating is worn away. Can these be cleaned up somehow without damage? Thanks for any advice...

Thanks for the info, 53 Oval. I like shiny over patina, so it is a bummer it can't be cleaned up. I don't think I could bring myself to drill holes in my VW to mount it anyway...

Ok. I know this one is a little off topic but still a St Christopher badge.

I couldn't find anywhere on the form about these particular badges.

From what I can work out using the internet:-

1. The factory badge was handed out to visitors at the VW factory in Wolfsburg. I'm not sure if it's real or what year it was made.

2. The St Christopher badge was handed out at the opening of the Christian church in Wolfsburg in the early 50's. I don't think it is the original one handed out as I came across this posting, https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=699389&highlight=st+christopher+badge showing a different badge.

I just bought another 100000 km badge, unfortunately with some damage on the back.
Can anyone of you tell me if it is real or fake? I have been reading this topic several times but I can' tell if the Christ child has the small head or not.
All thes pictures are from the same badge.

Hello assesories gurus Smile

I got a 100000km badge today, I'm not sure if its real or not.
It look old with the "patina", and the heads are much more detailed than my other 100000km badge. And it's really thin.

I also have these badges, but I'm pretty sure they are fake Smile

.
In the summer of 1984, my wife and I were visiting Tom Dobson, my good friend and VW enthusiast in England. It was also during the time the Beaulieau Auto Jumble was scheduled. This is a large event there and is England's version of the fall Hershey meet.

I was walking around the stands when Jimmy Murrey, another VW legend of the time, came up to me and said, "Paul, there is a guy over there in the markee selling new 100,000 KM badges."

Took me a while to realize that a markee is a tent and I finally found him.

Sure enough, there was a guy from Belgium with a long narrow box full of 100,000 KM badges. All were wrapped in tissue paper. Two styles, the St Christopher and the VW.
I bought two sets.

I say "Sets" because it is apparent to me that they were presented by dealers to owners as a set because there were small packets of screws, nuts, and washers for affixing which contained four of each.

Presumably the VW owners making that milestone would be given the choice of the St Christopher, with it's religiious connection, ot the plain VW with it's advertising value.

BUT ...........

After reading through the treads concerning 100,000 KM badges, I am embarresed that I was so naieve to think the source was from some dealer's surplus parts bin. Considering the program ended in 1961, there was a lot of time until 1984 for counterfits. The badges are most likely reproductions.

The one thing that is questionable is the existance of the maker's stamp on the rear of one of the body badges where the other one does not. That stamp could be an addition .....

What is the consensus of the experts ??

Ok, I'm hoping the experts can chime in and advise. Real or fake?

This came with a group of VW stuff I purchased last year. The quality look very good comparing it to others I've seen here. But I don't know anything about it.
I tried to get as good a picture as I could to help make a decision.

Appreciate your input and thanks in advance.
