I am finishing my 1960 VW Beetle sedan restoration project and right now im in the middle of replacing all the electrical parts of my car. What is the correct route to wire the car harness? Should it go through the headliner of below the carpet as in the diagram I have it does not show where did the electric cables pass through.

I think the main harness went up and over the driver's side roof strength member up untill '65, where it was re-routed to the inside edge of the driver's heater channel.

Yes, the main harness goes up through a channel along the drivers windshield post, along the roof line over the drivers side, and ends in the engine compartment.

If ythe old harness is still there, make sure to tie a chord to one end, then you can pull the old harness out from the other end, leaving you a way to easily pull the new harness back through. Unless you have an electical problem, you may want to consider leaving the old harness in place.

If the old harness is gone (somebody already pulled it out), try to fish a medium stiffness wire through the channel, and then use that to pull the new harness through.

Yup, goes through drivers side roof channel. I just did the wiring on my 62. Its a real pain getting the harness through the roof channel by yourself. Be sure to get a guide (rope or wire) in there so it will be easier to pull in. Good Luck! Very Happy

I did a 56 and it also went up over the drivers side. Everything went really smooth and it wasn't until everything was hooked up that I had a problem. So that you can save some frustration I will let you know that if you just had your bug painted and they put a lot of coats on it then you may have everything hooked up properly but run into grounding issues. I had to file away the paint in very tiny places to get a good ground but until I figured it out I spent hours mad as $#%@. Good luck

As everyone has said it does go from the left side of the engine compartment all the way up over the driver side and out the hood whole. I did not have a problem with the grounding but I would really suggest getting a thin metal snake beacuse they have a tendancy to be a pain in the but and get tangled up under the rear driver side window.

Just replaced the harness in mine. Tape the the new to the old at the front of the car, and pulled the old from the engine compartment, no problems. Just made sure there was nothing loose to snag while going through.
