Crisis over. Deepseeman does have what I need- a super nice correct og glass. In the meantime, I had the best glass repair guy in town fill the cracks and it actually looks pretty good (I could not even walk by the bus without throwing up. I had to do something) Eventually I'll buff the new piece and put it in with the og seal. _________________ '57 sunroof Standard

Well, secret is out. I bought the Brock Bus back. It has been to England, CA, and back to St. Louis where she started. I now have both my dream buses in the stable, and I will never let either of them go...... _________________ '57 sunroof Standard

Thanks! It is the only bus I have ever bought back. I really, really missed it and did not realize just how attached I was to it until it was gone. I appreciate John Foley selling it back to me. At the time the '63 came available, I had no way to come up with the funds to buy it, so out the '60 went. Ugh. It has actually improved a little. Someone did a fantastic job restitching all the blown seams on the original seat covers. Also, all the stationary window rubber was replaced. Just have to pay off the rather substantial family member loan it took to get her home..... _________________ '57 sunroof Standard

The amber inserts don't add any length to the screws as they just pop in and out.
If anyone has a '63 parts book, I'd be interested to know what is listed. That page is dated 7/62 in my early 60s parts book so yellow is not listed.
The '67 parts book makes it sound like yellow started for the 1964 model year but this may be confused by the fact that bullet lenses were used through 1963 in Europe. 1967 parts book composite image:
VIN # 1 144 282 is late July, 1963, most likely the start of the 1964 model year. |
My book is '68 but agrees with your's except I have USA only part #s listed.
It also added the dates for the B part # as beginning 8/63 and from chassis number 1 144 282. Pardon the delayed response, I hope you can sleep finally. The parts book is UNEX. |

Thanks for the follow-up.
Unfortunately I cannot as my '63 15-Window had orange inserts and I seriously doubt they were not original. I have old photos of it from the original owner and they are clearly orange.
I tried to Google research whether the USA made this a law around 62/63 and could not find anything definitive.
It did seems like it might be a state law things as opposed to federal so perhaps it differed by USA location. _________________ How to Post Photos

I would not doubt the insert would have been available when or sometime after the lenses were introduced, used for US market early pending required predictions. Then the parts identification for US marked at the year model break 8/63 when it was official. Something like that. OEMs were always at the mercy of preparing for impending regulations otherwise they could be caught pants down.
My work is in compliance with government regs and it is common enough to follow guidelines a year or more before the compliance deadlines. Then the official company policies are written/rewritten. Red tape has probably always been slow. And btw California still leads the pack for many things. Maybe a bus going to a CA port required them earlier than other US ports or some such scenario.
Kent's bus is St Louis port and I wouldn't be surprised if your's is a CA port. maybe that is relevant. |

God! I love this Deluxe! I just read the whole thread again... A legendary Bus owned buy the nicest guy. They were meant for each other. Luckily, I live only 15 miles from this Pearl White wonder and can visit it occasionally to drool. Simply stunning!

Back to the white 63 15. Any idea why it came with basalt grey instead of como interior and trim? Just curious if something from the option codes set this off or did the factory make that choice when building it? |

My guess would be because that matches.
Como Green would not match the way other VW color schemes do.
Basalt seems to be the default as well, I think all the other single color Deluxes of that time frame are also Basalt Grey? _________________ How to Post Photos

I was shocked to see this thread getting bumped again! I actually did some work on the bus recently. Did a complete carb/fuel pump rebuild, flushed the tank and filled it w/ 110 octane ethanol-free racing fuel for winter storage. Had the entire paint job professionally (carefully) polished. You have to get right up on it now to tell it's not a repaint.
