Okay my Bro in law has a 83 Jetta he bought new and I have been tinkering with the thing since he let it sit for a few years after he got famuous and bought Corvette... anyway I was wondering about any parts places anyone had dealt with for good used or replacement items, mainly door handles/ wing vent parts misc BS that goes bad on these models.
He want's to get it fixed up in time for my niece to use as her first car.
Any help would be appreciated. I'm gonna do a search on the web, but would rather start with a place a Samba-ite has used before. thanks |

Hi Kiefer-
I get all my watercooled stuff from Rick Schreiber at Import Parts Specialists in Boise. My shop does thousands of $$$ a month with IPS and Rick, Trish, and Andy really know their sheet on the watercooled German and Swedish stuff. Call them at 1. 800. 897. 7278 and tell 'em George from Cottage Grove, Oregon told you to call. I used them when I had my old shop, EuroCar Service, in Sun Valley, Idaho, and after five years in Oregon, there ain't nobody can touch them yet. Good luck! |

Thanks George, I will give them a shout.
As a side note; I read with interest your posts on FI and hope you will hang around and help answer some more of the FI questions, besides the type 3 column I saw your post in, there are always a few in the type 2 late and the super forum. |

Thanks for the kind words... Sure, I'll be around... I just get sore at all these guys dissin' Bobby Bosch for fuel injection that's "no good"... when "no good" just means "I don't have a clue how to fix it, so I'm gonna put carburetors on it". Too many so called VW "Specialists" can't- or won't work on fuel injection. To me, if you can't handle fuel injection, you ain't no frikkin' specialist! I've said it before and I'll say it again- You don't see Mercedes or Porsche techs advising customers to throw away their (same) injection systems and stick a carb on it!
That's my rant for tonight. Let me know how things work out with IPS. I have a second really good source, too, if you need it.
Geo. |

I am in Texas, but would pay to have some stuff shipped in, I don't have any time right now to go scrounging around here for the used stuff I would like to get, that is if it is still possible to get good used 83 stuff!
like door handles or wing vent parts/latches and some misc interior and or engine. I know the real trouble with that is these cars all had about the same rate of failure on these parts so most of the old ones left will have suffered in the same manner.. |

just like I posted things like the PLASTIC door handles, wing vent latches, shifter parts and lots of other somewhat minor things, It's the same as any other 80's cars it's old and stuff wears out/ time weather takes it's toll... I did not mean to be derogetory, they are decent cars in their own right. |

Come on Lauren, no car is perfect, not even a Mercedes- Benz. Kiefer, the nice thing about said VW is, if you have it and it works, is the AC blows ice cubes. |

Well, it always did blow cold ass air...till it sat for 3 years in the garage!
I would like to keep it R-12 for that fact, as most retro's I've done don't quite blow as cold ( I do know why, but most peeps do not have the $$$ to change all the components necessary to get it to blow 40 degree duct) as the OG 12 systems did ( NON AIR COOLED SYSTEMS ON ALL CARS BTW) even on a good day I think 55 is cold from a air cooled car... How bout those black Porsche 911 AC's eh George? LOL!
I think it may be worth the cost of a can of 12 to charge it up and check it out, maybe I'll get lucky and with an oil charge the compressor seal will re seat! I'm pretty sure thats where it leaked out from the non use... |

Actually, K., I've had very good luck with 134a. It gets down to 40 in my '72 280 SE 4,5 Benz... But then, if you don't mind the expense, R12 may be your baggie. Porsche 911 AC? That's a laugh. I have a customer who is into self- mutilation- owns a 930 and a 928S4, both with "AC". I think the dealer installed AC on my old 1972 Type 3 was far better. As I've told him, as far as Porsche AC goes in these cars, you can't make cream out of shiite. Anyone who wants AC in a "racecar" has priority issues. And that 928S with AC AND... an automatic??? |
