ok, so i did a search first and did not find answers.
with my car on the ground I grab my rear tire at 12 and 6 and rock it back and fourth. there is some play. is this normal? my rear axle nuts are torqued correctly.
with the car jacked up and the hubcap off i do not see any movement. with it in the air it is very minor. with it on the ground it feels much worse. _________________ www.cultwagen.com |

Hi jroymcd,
When you say "rock back and fourth", do you mean rotating the wheel or the wheel in/outward wiggle? If the latter a tiny amount is normal, more than that might mean axle bearing replacement or even problems in the inner axle area. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

You should call me after you get off work. I'll try to come out and look at it. |

I think i just need to replace the wheel bearings. do you need a puller to do this? _________________ www.cultwagen.com |

No, I sure dont. The Muir guide tells you how to make one. The ones you buy from any part store are TOO big. I dont remember how I got mine out before but I'm sure I took out the whole tube Since I was replacing a bent axle. If you dont have a guide I have one. I guess you could check buggyhouse for a bearing puller. The muir one Is a piece of metal two bolts that you take to a bench grinder to make it grab the lip of the bearing. |

I wondered about this myself. I noticed a small amount of side to side movement - which was equal on both sides - on the rear. I wasn't sure if this was normal. My bolts are at torque and teeth are healthy German teeth - not Brazilian. I replaced the bearings around a year+ ago, but just noticed the movement recently. But I also wasnt looking for it previously, so I wasnt sure. It is very slight, but lacking knowledge in this area, any movement seemed wrong at first glance. _________________ Fish |

Make sure the axle nut is bottoming out on the brake drum. Mine kept loosening up even with new German drums and proper torque until I realized the nut was bottoming out on the axle. Not sure why this was happening but hardened thick washers between the drum and nut cured it. |

Thanks for the tip. That is one of the first things I checked. I was keeping a close eye on it as I moved it too - and double checked the torque after moving it around.
After you added the washers - is there any movement left at all, or did it eliminate the side to side completely? Unless someone tells me it is a bad move, I would prefer to eliminate all play - it just makes me think things will get worn out quicker if left moving around like that. _________________ Fish |

The washers eliminated all of the play. |
