Very nice writeup!!
I put a subwoofer in one and an amp in the other....no drawers for me, but the stereo sounds great now!! |
You got a subwoofer under the seat? Care to share any pics? I've been trying to figure out if there's any way to add a sub without compromising valuable cabin space....and sounds like you've found it! |

I just got done working in the area below the front seats. I applied a Dyna-mat type of soundproofing. My tap test shows that the metal is muffled compared to the snare drum effect left by the factory. Any drawer that is installed will definitely reduce road noise as well. |

I removed the panels yesterday with a rented Sawzall from a local hardware store...thanks to the OP for the how to! I was ever so slightly worried about loosing a finger, but it really wasn't that hard to use..just a little awkward to get the correct angle...
I installed an amp under the driver's side....
Now does anyone happen to know of a powered subwoofer that fits under the passenger seat??
I was looking at the Sound Ordnance from Crutchfield, but it looks like it's about half an inch too tall... Anyone have any knowledge to drop here?
Thanks!! |

I installed a Boss flat sub under the passenger seat in 2010, with swivel. How?
1. Swivel base is bolted in, not stock from factory which is welded.
2. Willingness to mod the brand new sub box with router to clearance as needed, especially for the swivel release rod. I think I may have modded the rod a bit too. Definitely not drop-in install, but it is possible. Super tight, but works nicely.
So it can be done if you are determined.

Why I am the driver!
Actually it is not earth-shaking, mostly just fills out the sound. I would prefer it elsewhere, I'd rather hear than feel the bass, but we didn't want to lose storage space. _________________ 1986+ Wolfsburg Weekender Pop-Top 2.3 WBX Manual Trans |

Nice solution! Did you remove the top panel of the subwoofer case to modify it? And do the cuts you made still allow the enclosure to be "sealed?"
I have the same unit under my factory Westy swivel seat (tight fit).
I removed the swivel release lever all together. I use a "stopper" (a few washers glued together for the time being) and insert it in the slot where the release lever would normally catch. Works fine, but does require a couple added seconds to remove/insert the stopper to swivel. _________________ -James

Hah! Nice to see another version. Nice work getting that in there without top access.
I think the enclosure is still sealed, although the last plunge cut was pretty deep. I did it with a router with the speaker taped off/protected from debris, I did not dissasemble. I tried squashing down the speaker grill too and that was a fail, if you look carefully the holes from the screws I inserted to pull it back out are visible.
Nothing like voiding the warranty on an item before it is even installed! _________________ 1986+ Wolfsburg Weekender Pop-Top 2.3 WBX Manual Trans |

Nice work with the subwoofer! On my base Vanagon, if I slide the seat back a bit, I can access that storage area without cutting any sheet metal. Are the Westys more cramped with the swivel? I use the space to store the front curtains and a dashboard sun protector/visor on the passenger side and my Dockstar (squeezeplug media server) in front of the aux battery on the driver side. _________________ _____________________

How do u get the top
Panel off???
I had my seat and swivel base off today but there's still another panel blocking acess to this secret storage??? It seems like its part of the van, I didn't see a way if removing it?
In ur pics you have full access from the top with the seat and swivel base removed.
I want to put a sub In each side without cutting the panel off in the fron if possible. _________________ San Francisco/Mayo Ireland

Reread my post which you quoted, point #1.
Others have had success approaching from the front by cutting out the sheet metal.
Good luck. _________________ 1986+ Wolfsburg Weekender Pop-Top 2.3 WBX Manual Trans |

Also, I should note, when I removed the Boss logo (held down by two torx screws), I found that I was getting some weird buzzing noise. Problem was solved by simply screwing the torx back in, without the logo. _________________ 1989 Bostig Syncro Westy |

Thanks for that tip. I too removed the logo, so far no buzzing but now I know what to check first should it arise. _________________ 1986+ Wolfsburg Weekender Pop-Top 2.3 WBX Manual Trans |

if you can, turn on the sub with some heavy bass, then plug those holes with your fingers. I noticed a big difference in the buzziness when i did that... _________________ 1989 Bostig Syncro Westy |

Hey guys,
I'm about to install the Boss 600 subwoofer under the passenger seat in my multivan tomorrow. Quick question though... if I remove the seat and drop the sub into that secret space from the top, do I still need to cut out the front? I would think that I could fit the sub in there without cutting out the front near the passenger's legs, right? Thanks.
