|
|
I have always been fascinated by the 36HP VW engine. I am going to HotRod one just to see. I wonder how much stroke you can grind in the stock crank will fit in that thing.
I am also contemplating longer rods...in the 6 inch range.
The Chevy Carrillo or Eagle units seem like good donors.
Is there any performance cams for the 36HP? Everything else can be grafted from other VW engines but the cam I am not so sure if any aftermarket supply out there.
I will set up a TruLine for alignboring the mains. Cam inserts will be a must on this one.
Main bearings? Well...these are going to have to be custom machined.
I know these are more rare than rooster teeth. |

I got me a crank grinder, Al. I am excited. I will finally be able to do what I have always wanted. Stick some BigBlock Chevy rods in the flimsy 36HP VW.
You think Titanium valves will be nice in the heads too?
The Notch is coming along good. The garage is getting expanded a little.
More room is good. How is everything down there? |

I've got one set up right now with H beams on a 72mm stroke,5.4 rods.I'll post some pictures later today. Two ways to tackle the cam bearing problem.Cut the case for stock 40hp/1600 cam bearings and weld/regrind the mains on the 36hp cam for the bigger bearing, works fine but is a pain in the neck (hard to find a welder that can do it).Or cut for the smaller size and make some bearings from a donor set, you'll have to cut the oil holes by hand. Two performance cams in stock,if I can get a local grinder motivated,I may have a couple more choices.
My faux paux, rods are 5.4,not 5.6 as previously stated. _________________ 30 years experience in the sales of new and used auto parts!

Seems to me it'd be more resourceful to sell off the parts to a vintage restorer who'd make good use of the engine rather than try to reinvent the wheel again, but hey, that's just me. |

Mom told me not to say something just like that bugnut68, she also said that a short stroke and long rod is going to make for a lazy bottom end. _________________ hEY, lOOK, i'M WRONG HALF THE TIME, AND THE OTHER HALF i'M NOT SURE WHAT THE HECK i'M TALKING ABOUT. Lazy bottom end ...my foot. Sure...if you have teeny--weenie valve size.
I for one really do not like soggy bottom end. The combo will make sense. Let me handle it. |

Maybe since you've got that new crank grinder, you should start looking into regrinding cams too! .520 lift in a 36horse? Why stop now. After seeing those guys at the Bug-in a couple years ago with the turboed 36 on the strip, I say go nutz, dude! |

cam grinding? Doesn't somebody grind cams already for the 36HP?
I just brought the STorm Vulcan crank grinder home from Alabama. It is trully one nice machine....loaded too.
Maybe we can do more 74mm strokers than 69mm strokes. No more 1776cc? more 2054cc? |

What is wrong Terry? You do not like a little Viagra to help out a smaller motor?
Hell...I had just gotten done putting Titanium valves in my Sears Lawnmower...Briggs and sTratton. There was not much porting though. |

I recall seeing old school VW drag cars with souped-up 36 hp powerplants in magazines so I guess it's not too farfetched. Okrasa used to supply some performance parts; maybe Joe Ruiz (Mr. Okrasa) might be able to shed some light on this subject. |

I have been working with an individual utilizing a 36HP engine for land speed racing. His car will be unveiled next season..
Lets just say it makes power in the 3 digit levels on my dyno.
For a cam we used a roller profile from a BB Chevy with some changes on a 8620 CNC machined blank. Till that point he was shearing cams at the center main.
This 36 HP also has cam bearings and uses 356A cylinder heads with serious mods to the case and heads. It runs 14:1 CR as well... _________________ Jake Raby

Ummm, 3 digit power levels? Would that be something like, say 40.2...?? I look forward to hearing more about this one, Jake!
I like the sound of the hotrod 36'er - Why not go with a Ducati-style desmo valvetrain while you're at it? Or go with rotary valve heads...

The money he has spent on this endeavor could buy 10, 200 HP engines!!
But he is bound and determined to head to Bonneville for speed week next year! _________________ Jake Raby

I hear you about that "salt" ailment, Jake. There's a pair of brothers around here that caught the fever a few years ago with a blown flathead Ford. |
