I've talked to a couple guys on this forum a few times about my brother's '73 Thing. Before I ask anything else, I just wanted to say a huge thanks...you guys have helped me out so much...with that said...I need some more advise. I finally got the brakes and steering completed and both are working great. But even after replacing the generator this past summer with a new one, the power being drawn from the car is greater than the output of the generator. I think that is due to the stereo I put in it this past summer. If you don't mind filling out a couple lines of info, check out my album for pictures. I guess the Thing was never meant for a 400 watt stereo with subs. Anyways, I was wondering if anyone had any experience putting an alternator in the Thing and how they went about doing it. I'd rather do this than put in a capasitor for the stereo because eventually we plan to put some off road lights on the front too so those will suck up even more power.

| Go for the alternator. I put the 51 amp in last month after being tired of dim lights at night. The swap was easy since I run dual webbers. The wiring swap was easy as well as there are several good sites on the web that cover this conversion. Several things I found out: You dont need new backing plates as All 12 volt generator backing plates are the same. My old fuel pump fit and it was the straight one, not the angled one. You will need the alternator stand.Also buy the new alternator, not a rebuilt one. Ps: you may need the 75 amp for your electrical load. |

| Most VW parts suppliers have all the parts you need to convert from a generator to an alternator. Seems like it is around $150. |

| Try Kymco Motorsports in Costa Mesa, CA (ads in Hot VW's) . I ran one of their Super 75 (amp) alternators in my Thing with 2200watts, and no problems. Great product! |
