|
|
Can any of you 73 Thing owners with a gas heater tell me how much the heater's exhaust pipe is supposed to extend past the cars body work (under the fender)? I've got a really nice pipe here, but it's rotted out at the end (about 1 inch inside the trunk). I've looked on the RoMOTC V CD, but it didn't help give me a length. I've got some pipe here, and I'm fairly decent with a welder (do it by trade), but I need a length before I install the refurbished heater. Thanks for ANY help. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I have one in the garage I have not installed yet, if I can reach it I will measure it. Seems to me it would be ok if longer thou. |

Yeah, I thought that I would need it to be a little less than out to the shock tower. But looking at the one on the Thing Shop's web site, it looks like it's supposed to have a flap at the end of it. Not sure if it makes a difference or not. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

After it goes through that hole in the body, it bends (forward IIRC) runs for a few more inches, then ends with a flat cap and hole in the side of the pipe. That flat end is the flap you think you see, but it's not a moving part. It's kind of an odd shape, but I've had some heavy backfires through that pipe without damage - so I assume that funky end is some kind of voodoo German engineering. |

Kinda like the flap on the intake (even if it doesn't move, it's still there). If you had a pic, with something in the background to help etablish length, that would be very helpful. I just can't see spending the money for a piece of pipe, tha I might already have here. Thanks for any help you can offer. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Well, that's a help. I can approximate it's length using the fuel pump as a reference. This Thing is costing a small fortune to rebuild, and we're getting close to painting the outside right now. It's already painted on the inside, and the metal fab work is done. Good thing we started this project right after the 4th of July. The new owner is taking delivery of it next week. Then I can go back to working on my Notchback. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I have bought from Gary and met him. Nice guy, if you email him I am sure he will send you a pic with a measuring tape next to it. Or measure it for you. Worth a try. |

I just took a bunch of pics of that tube next to a tape measure, both in and out of the car. I'm uploading them now. |

THANK YOU Ian. Those were the pics that I needed, along with something to use as a reference. I really do appreciate the help. My dad wants to take the Thing to Brownsville for the winter, and I've been working out in the shop basically a 2nd shift trying to get it done in time. The worst part was I thought / figured I had until the 17th of October to finsh it, then I find out it's more like the 10th that he wants it. That 7 day loss hurts. Plus we (my son and I) keep running into little things that keep popping up like that pipe. If I had known how much was supposed to be sticking out of the car, I'd have gotten one from Ark, when he rebuilt the heater. Live and learn I guess. Thanks for the help. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof
